Most pirates never buy the game, even if they liked it. In a game I used to play several hours every day, about half of the people who played as much as I did pirated the game... even years later when it could be had for $10. They obviously liked it, but had no intention of ever paying since the pirated version worked fine.
Pirates buying the game if they like it is just as overstated as the companies assuming every pirated copy is a lost sale
. Unfortunately it's hard to determine the impact of piracy, since game sales vary by too many factors to have a comparison. Knowing Microsoft, I'm sure DRM will be in full force... hopefully it will be like steam where you don't notice it.
