How does NCIX, TigerDirect, & Amazon compare to Newegg for protecting HDDs with good packaging?

Does anyone have any experience ordering HDDs from NCIX, TigerDirect, Amazon, or other retailers?

How good or bad did they package the HDD(s)?

The last drives I ordered were from Newegg, but that was two years ago. They were packed well, but when I read the reviews on newegg some customers complain about how they're packed. Are they still packed well or is it a crapshoot?

What experiences have you guys had with good and bad hard drive protecting / packaging / boxing from online sellers?

I order mine off amazon and haven't been alarmed by packaging yet.

Retail HDD boxes are padded enough themselves.... that's what packaging engineers are for.

Barebone drives are another thing but HDDs are pretty resilient powered off.
Once again...

I've been tempted to order from Amazon because I have prime.

Now this is probably out of the ordinary, but this article did make me think twice.

How did it come packaged when you ordered from them?

True. I meant bare OEM drives, I should have been more specific.

Newegg used to have a bad reputation for packaging OEM drives, but I think they have improved a lot in recent years.

My last OEM drive order from AmazonNewegg was less than a month ago. The drive was wrapped in bubble wrap inside a small white cardboard box, and then put inside a larger brown cardboard box. I was happy with it.

Was the smaller box surrounded by peanuts or packing paper, or was it loose in the larger box?

I'm glad they switched from the bumpers, because it the drives came loose from them they were banging around bare. Bubble wrap is a good improvement.

You know what, thinking back, the order was from Newegg, not Amazon. My bad. smile.gif

Anyways, the inner box was padded with packaging paper inside the bigger box.

No complaints about Newegg or TigerDirect. Last time I ordered from TD was several years back and the HDDs were even double-boxed (HDD in bumpers in snug fitting smaller box, inside large box with peanuts). Newegg has always had adequate packaging from my experience. Plenty of bubble wrap, styrofoam and peanuts to protect the drives.

Amazon, yeah, hate to say it but they're the worst I've used. My only HDD purchase from Amazon was a 1TB WD Green and it came in a small box with the HDD shrink wrapped to a piece of cardboard. No peanuts, no packing paper, no air pak. Needless to say, I never bought an HDD from Amazon again.
