Dead connector - - Seasonic G-550

Thread Starter
I just purchased new components including a Seasonic G-550. Took me awhile to finally figure out that one of the two 4x2 PCIE connectors is not working.

I originally tried to power a video card with 2 4x2 PCIE connectors and it did not work. I switched to using the sata/ide ports with converters to power the video card and it worked. Then I tried a combination of the two and found the port that was not working.

I don't think I will be needing to use that connector ever because I wont be adding anything else into this computer expect maybe some small things. Is this something I need to be concerned with?

Assuming it's not the cables I'd be tempted to send it back for a new model. You just bought it so you're not exactly getting your moneys worth if its defective.

a quality PSU like the one you bought is a long term investment. i'm still using my seasonic S12 and it's almost 7 years old... so you may not use that plug NOW, but you don't know what you will be doing in your next 2 builds using that same PSU biggrin.gif

It has a 5 year warranty so I'm not going to send it in now, but I will down the road.

thanks

I've seen:

1. Dirty or oxidized connectors. Disconnect the AC power cord, and plug and unplug the connectors several times to wipe them clean. The connector usually works fine by the 3rd reconnection.

2. Loose crimps. Maybe removing one pin at a time and recrimping will help, but don't be surprised if the copper wire is oxidized and needs to be cut back and re-stripped.

3. Wire not soldered to the circuit board. I've seen that just once in a PSU, where 2 ground wires and the circuit board pads around them had solder, but flux kept them apart. The wires were easy to pull out.

I'll try replugging the cables a few times and get a good look at the pins.
