How do I see the OS and setup the software if there is not a video card in the system?

Well obviously you need video output for OS installation in this case. But once its set up and running. Take the card out and just stick something like VNC on it. If you use freenas or openfiler, they have web interfaces that you can access from other pc's anyway.

Looks like after cost analysis it would be better to get a NAS for my needs. Cloud software is needed and it would be useful to have. With 30 dollar off coupons at places for the NAS helps bring it down. Granted most of them are 1 bay but there are a few two bay Synology and some QRAPs but the Synology supports windows 8 phones with their own company apps verse third party apps from Qrap. I just like the esata on all the Qraps NAS drives.

What software do you need? I find it hard to believe you can't get the same on a homebuilt. Personally I would just use what you have and use one of the many oses people have said, I'll also say there is unraid to.

Well I was looking at compatibility in a cloud with Windows 8 and IOS. Do not care too much for Android compatibility. I have Windows 8 phone and my wife has an IPhone but with some of the kits the services are good for Iphone or droid but not Windows 8 Phone. Synology is compatible with the Win 8 and I have found the apps on my Win 8 phone. I just tried the service and Linux background from my neighbor. I did not know he had a Synology 212J in his house but he said it is a god send for his night shift stuff. Also my wife wants to put a Security camera system in the house and they have the same systems for inside and outside.

I could get build one but then my wife will have to understand how to use it and now the neighbors wife told her it is easy to use. She knows more than she puts on about technology but she is always on the go with her job and wants something that works out of the box and not something that works when I am around. Simple is always better with more than one person.

Ok that makes a lot of sense since some stuff takes a lot to get perfect and it sounds like you just want something to work without having to tinker.

I like to tinker but when it comes to my wife using things I have found piece of mind letting things be a simple as possible. With the 213j being 199 from synology it might be better than me playing around with a piece here and there since I have 2 tb wd green drive for it right now.

I might still make a server based setup. I found out I might be able to get a copy of win 2008 or win 2012 server for free.

I guess it might be good to be a student except for the headaches.
