SLi 8800GTX's beat anything today. But R600's look strong. The best, however, if you have a $1,000,000 coupon to Newegg and you were purchasing today would be SLi'd 8800GTX's.

SLi doenst automatically give you a 10-30% performace increase, some games it just doesnt matter.

Ya, my friend has dual 7900GTXs, and got more FPS in CS: Source with SLI disabled. Odd, I know, but unless you're over 1600 x 1200 resolution, SLI isn't the HUGE performance boost most would expect from it, especially in high end cards. However, with max detail at low resolutions (1280 x 1024) 2 7600s would own a single 7600. However, the 7900 GTX can handle most anything out there (short of Oblivion) so a second one is pretty much overkill for most games.

Look at the 3Dmark06 Scores, probably the results most people are looking for. The 8800GTX at lower resolutions wins, the 7900GTX SLI at higher resolutions wins.

My brother's 7900GTX can handle Oblivion maxed out but then again, his single GPU is perfect for his 1280x1024 monitor. SLi'd 7900GTX's would run Oblivion very nicely at 1680x1240. I'd personally get one 8800GTX and have the option of running that in SLi once 2nd or 3rd generation DirectX 10 GPUs hit the market.
