I'm no expert, but I have experienced similiar issues with laptops to find the faulty equipment to be either the RAM, or the hard drive. Don't go and buy anything, try swapping parts from your boys rig into yours to troubleshoot the problem. Nothing worse than spending more $ to find that the problem wasn't even remotely close to what you thought it was. Best of luck man!
