Fry's Won't Accept a CPU Return if CPU Marking Are Gone!

Thread Starter
I tried to return a 4770K to Fry's since it hangs on post sometimes at the CPU LED on a M6E.

I used CL Pro and CL tells you to use the supplied buff pad to prep the top of the CPU and the bottom of the HSF.

Well the buff pad erases the markings on top of the CPU and now Fry's will not let me return it for a refund.

Has anyone else had this problem when trying to return a CPU with out the markings on top?

Haven't ever had this problem before but if Fry's won't accept it then try an RMA to Intel. Although it is extremely rare for a CPU to ship broken, I would RMA the motherboard. Are you sure there were no bent pins? Best of luck to you OP.

Well they could argue that buffing the top like that did something to the CPU. You changed the product physically which in almost all cases unless you have extended warranty's or something, will void it.

Are you really surprised? Taking the time to install and boot to find out which CPU is which would be painstakingly expensive.

Definitely try Intel. Explain to them why the print is no longer there. They'll accept it, they'd have to since they offer the Tuning Protection plan. Can't imagine how many CPUs they get through that program that no longer have print on them.

Good luck thumb.gif

Intel might not take it in either, they need the numbers from IHS to accept the RMA, even under the Tuning Protection plan. you may try, but they may refuse, try to contact them over Intel Chat over this. if you do want to buy Intel Tuning Protection Plan anyways (it's just $25), keep in min that it comes into effect after 30 days from purchase.

Intel won't take it, physical alterations like this are explicitly listed as voiding the warranty.

Even letting them know you used Liquid Pro or Liquid Ultra might be cause for them to deny RMA.

i always thought that it is a common knowledge that removing those markings will void warranty/returns.
