[Build Log] Working Title Rig - (Vengeance C70, 4670k, H100i, HD 7950)

R.I.P, Sig Rig
My 2009 sig rig (which was upgraded for the second time with a Phenom II 965, Radeon HD 7850 and 120GB SSD last year - never updated sig), is flaking out more and more with CPU fan errors and randomly failing to boot. I'm not sure if it's the motherboard or the PSU, but I feel i've pushed it about as far as it can go since its humble beginnings with a 550BE, 4GB ram, a 5770 and a single 1TB drive. I have recently attempted to replace the CPU cooler to no avail, and I'm not willing to spend any more money on it. Oh, the power button is broken too - I've been using the reset button to turn it on for the last year or so. So the still relatively new 965, 7850 and SSD will go into the missus' PC. She might notice the difference in the sims 3 or whatever. The optical drives, hard drives and xonar card will be salvaged and used in the new build as you'd expect, and I won't be buying any new peripherals either because they're all still awesome, IMO (Razer gear, beefy logitech speakers and a 27" 1080p). The rest will be retired.

"Can I be in your gang?" back to Intel after 13 years
*Waves a white flag*... no hard feelings, right?
So I'm excited about this build for a couple of reasons. Firstly, this is far and away the highest-spec machine I've ever had, in terms of market range. When I did the last build I was a broke student, so I started with the basics and built it up in stages. My two PCs prior to that, well I was a kid. I built an Athlon 64 with a Radeon 9800 in 2004 on christmas money for Half Life 2, and before that I was bought a Pentium 3 in 2000, but I didn't know a damn thing about computers then. I've never built an Intel rig - all the rigs I have built for friends have been AMD.

What's it for?
Usage wise this will be strictly a gaming build, I want it to be up to scratch for GTA 5 whenever that lands on PC, and I'm hoping it will keep up with the next-gen games set to arrive with the new consoles such as Battlefield 4. I also have an unfortunate tendancy to re-sub WoW every so often... yeah that'll be happening.

I have no interest in cluttering it up with anything else. I would even prefer not to have to use it for storage actually, and just run the SSD alone, but I can't justify buying the NAS I want to buy right now. I prefer a 14" laptop for other day-to-day computing activities such as browsing, programming, running my eBay shop and other business.

Overclockers.co.uk order in transit!
It's all due to arrive tomorrow. First time using Overclockers, by the way. I had been a loyal eBuyer customer since 2007, but they've lost me this time due to their shambolic inability to do timed delivery on most baskets these days, and their customer service treatment of me last time I used them. I could have saved £100 by using eBuyer, but I'm sick of supporting them.

Enough waffle - here's the order:
  • Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail
  • Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
  • Gigabyte ATi Radeon HD 7950 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
  • Corsair Vengeance Pro Blue 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit
  • Corsair Hydro H100i High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler
  • Intel 335 Series 20nm 240GB 2.5" SATA 6Gbs Solid State Hard Drive - Retail
  • Corsair 2013 Edition Gamer Series GS 700W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply
  • Corsair Vengeance C70 Midi Tower Gaming Case - GunMetal Black

Up next...
I'll be taking a few pics tomorrow as I put it together, and I'll hopefully get around to overclocking, installing some games, posting benchmarks and so on. Might not be straight away as I'm moving house in under a week and probably shouldn't be playing with my toys too much right now... Anyway I'll be shooting for a decent overclock on the Windforce 7950 as I understand there's plenty of room there for it to perform on a par with the 7970 and it's adequately cooled. As for the i5, to be honest I'd be more than happy with a 4GHz overclock as I've never had a machine with that clock before. (When I first joined this forum, 4GHz was something of a badge of honor, I think, so it's still a landmark to me even though I see people are pushing 5 these days...) Going with a haswell board and having the H100i, I hope, is something of an investment for the next few years rather than an immediate asset. I'm not too keen on pushing this chip too hard because I understand the thermal issues it has.

Anyway, thanks for reading my self-indulgent wafflings (now I've got it all of my chest I can stop boring the missus with it) and hopefully some of you guys will get something out of it with the benchmarks in the end.

Looks like you will have a pretty solid rig. I have a C70 myself and I love it.

Scripped your rig name just cracked me up! biggrin.gif
If you decide to call your new one "Snatch" however it may be misinterpreted! smile.gif

I also recently returned to Intel in my desktop, I did take a 2 gaming laptops break for 5 years but they just weren't the same, plus back then both kids wanted PC's so upgrades involved 3 machines.

Great looking build you have there, and you will find the case a joy to work with
Couple of tips for the case, If they haven't improved the bottom filter retaining lumps, they will slide out when picking the case up, a bit of tape in the middle to hold the filters in place is the first mod.
Secondly to improve airflow in the case you may want to remove the top 3.5"drive cage, especially as you don't intend to put a ton of storage in there, the cages are almost solid and severely restrict airflow from the front fans.

While I did use ebuyer (they were the only one's to have stock of everything I wanted in Haswell launch week) I completely agree with the decline in their customer service, deliveries take longer, RMA's have become a chore and to be Frank their prices are not that competitive anymore, in fact SCAN and ARIA were kicking their rear regions on pretty much everything.

Enjoy the build, looking forward to the pictures, and there is no excuse for untidy cables in the C70 so we will be watching! smile.gif

Sounds solid! thumb.gif

Be sure to come join us in the Corsair C70 Case Club when you start posting the photos, we love looking at the builds for C70 owners and the cable management they've worked hard for!

Hey, thanks for the responses guys! I promise I'll pay attention to tidy cables and will drop by the C70 owners thread. Not the tidiest PSU cable-wise, I fancied a fully modular one but did have to set myself a budget here, got a lot of other stuff to pay out for at the moment. Thanks for the case-specific tips, too, BakerMan1971.

Sadly due to a ****-up with DPD it didn't arrive today frown.gif. Should mention it's not their fault by the way, there was a problem with my postcode due to PayPal for some reason passing an old-ass incorrect address entry that I deleted months ago to Overclockers. Going to collect it from the depot on Monday evening now. No biggie, I'll update on Monday with some pics!
