I haven't tried this yet. I'll have to see.

@the other posters, if I want to do DBAN on a flash drive, do I have to be able to use the F6 menu and select to boot from flash drive? Because I am unable to use that menu in my computers current state.

[edit: What would I want to do in safe mode that would fix it?]

Lastly, I forgot to mention that when I turned on my other pc that runs off of wireless router connected to this computer that had the problem first the intermittent disconnect problem happened on this wireless pc right away. Could a virus have gone over the wireless network and infected this pc too? Thats what I was thinking happened since my ISP's tests came out clean for my modem. And when I disconnected the router from the modem and plugged my original pc directly into the modem, the problem of intermittent disconnect still happened.

The battery on the motherboard could of died. How olds you board? Years? I would change the battery. For Dban only plug the OS Drive you want cleaned and the USB flash stick. You will have to enter the BIOS to set the boot order to USB 1st. Have you updated the Firmware on the Router? I had a Dlink that would drop wireless until the new firmware fixed it? Also try only one Stick of Ram in diffrent DiMMS in to see if you have bad ram or it's not seatted fully?

First off, it is rather unlikely that a virus is causing your intermittent disconnects through wifi or otherwise, without causing other issues as well. And unless you have NO antivirus installed, downloading a torrent file will get flagged by most any antivirus software when you try to access it.

I have personally never heard of a virus that infects BIOS. But I'm sure somewhere, there are rare cases of it happening.

In safe mode, run a multitude of antivirus, anti malware programs to try and find any culprits to your misbehaving machine. I personally recommend Malwarebytes, Emsisoft anti malware (formerly known as A squared), along with Avast, and Advanced System Care. These programs are all free(the paid for versions dont offer much more), and work fairly well. I know others will recommend other programs, but these are my personal choices. Others that get suggested may work just as well too.

Like Buzzkill suggested, do you run a router off of the modem? Or do you connect directly to the Modem. Faulty firmware can be the cause of the disconnects like he said.

A bad CMOS battery would alert you everytime you turned on your computer, among other random occurences, like random sudden shutdowns, losing your BIOS settings, losing your boot order. THis would happen every time you turned the computer off and on again.

No need to panic, try running a Linux LiveCD first (via ethernet) to make sure it's just Windows.

If it fails in Linux it might just be a CMOS battery, router/modem, bad bootloader, or network adapter issue

I ended up bringing my tower to best buy just to see if the internet connection would work there and it did. The tech recommended a new modem which I tried and I'm happy to say it worked. However one thing I need to figure out is how to get our old netgear wireless-N 150 router to work with this new modem. The modem has a different mac address which I had to register with my isp. So I'm thinking that if I connect the router to my modem I won't get any internet and therefore would have difficulty editing the settings of my router. Also, I am trying to find out how to reset my wireless router back to factory settings so I can get it to work with this new modem and so my family can connect to the wireless router. Any suggestions on how to go about reseting the router and then configuring it correctly? The guides I've found haven't been clear. I completely forget the username and password to the router but I do recall that they were changed from the defaults (username: admin, password: password)

The new modem Mac address will have to be updated with your ISP so it will work. To login to your NETGEAR router administration interface, open the following URL using your web browser -
http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 or http://www.routerlogin.net or http://www.routerlogin.com For most Netgear devices the following are default the username and password :
•Username = admin
•Password = password
◦( For older devices, Password = 1234 )
You can factory reset thre router but if you just unplugg for 5 minutes it when you switch modems it should work because the modem MAC is what the service provider uses for your service.

Restoring a Netgear Router to Factory Default Settings

I would try to up date the router firmware. This might be the manual for your netgear router WNR1000_SM_WW_23Jan09.pdf 680k .pdf file

If that Netgear Manual is the right model number on the here this is the firmware update http://downloadcenter.netgear.com/en/Disclaimer.aspx?redirecturl=http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/WNR1000V1/WNR1000 Firmware Version 1.0.1.15 (North America).zip

There are 3 diffrent model versions so you will need to look on the back and see if it WRN1000v1, WRN1000v2, WRN1000v3 and use the correct firmware for the Model Number and Version you have, Only up date router firmware on Ethernet cable; Never use wireless connection to flash.

Or you can look up the Netgear downloads/Manuals you need here: http://downloadcenter.netgear.com/default.aspx

I ended up resetting the router's log in information and updating the firmware. When I had my mom's laptop in my room where the router is I could connect to the wireless connection easy. However when she is in the living room (20 feet away) she can't get a signal. Any idea what could be wrong?

One thing I noticed that was kind of funny was that the network it was connecting to had the same name as the old network before I redid the router password. However this connection worked when it was in my room. Not sure how to fix this.

Check within the router settings for "Tx Power Level" If it has it, set it to high, or its highest setting. That rasies the signal strength of the Wireless connection.

If it is a new router, it may not be as powerful as the previous, and might not be able to broadcast at the same distance.

Changing the router password will not change the networks name. Unless you went in to the router settings and changed the SSID name yourself.
