Power Routers/Switches with PSU's Peripheral Power Connector?

Is this feasible? To draw power from power supply 12VDC and feed 12V 1A home-grade routers/switches?

I am thinking about putting a switch inside the case for a colo environment to save on colo and port cost...

Yes, your PSU +5v and +12v are actually cleaner and more stable than those from a power brick.

I have done this myself with a +5v 4-port switch.

Just make sure you buy the right plug that fits.
Once again...

Thanks. What is the connector on the router/switch side called?
When I reboot the computer, does the 12v output get cut off for a second? That can be a problem.

I read somewhere that if I feed the switch from peripheral power and connect the switch to the computer via Ethernet cable, they will share a common ground which may cause problems?

Go to Radio Shack and try out the plugs.

Yes, the +12v will cut out.

Why would common ground be an issue?
