Hi there,

My friend currently has a single 7850 and is looking to upgrade his gpu setup.
He has a FX-6300, AsRock 970 Extreme 3, OCZ 600w PSU and a Phantom 410.

He currently doesn't know which setup to go with. Obviously a 7850 crossfire setup would produce better frame rates but the heat and power problems are an issue. Also he wants to watercool in the future, so the addition of another gpu could be a hassle considering his case isn't the best for watercooling....

A 7850 is £134 and a 670 £170.

Which setup would you think is better considering the situation?

thanks

A 670 (or a 760 for that matter) will produce much less heat and will be more compatible with games. Although 7850s give more FPS the general frame lag will not make up for the smoothness of the 670. In other words, more FPS on the 7850s might not be better than the single 670.
I would get a 670 with a 680 PCB (GB WF3 or EVGA FTW) and you can find many waterblocks for them.

not a good idea to use multi-gpu with that mobo. one gpu will run at X4. tell your friend to go for the 670.

Yeah i agree with you completely... The only problem is that his current 7850 which he would probably sell to afford a 670 has two fan blades snapped off so it vibrates kinda a lot and he probably couldn't sell it. and then he may not be able to afford a 670....

replace the fan yourself or RMA. without a doubt sell HD 7850 and get GTX 670 or HD 7950. do not buy a ref GTX 670 which is just cheap. both PCB and cooler are very mediocre. go for GB GTX 670 WF3 for 200 pounds. alternatively even a HD 7950 is a good option. both cards compete well with each other.
