Smartphones for dummies

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

Been on the forums for quite a while now. I'm really glad to say that OCN is one of the better forums out there. I've really taken a liking for this place and am glad to be a part of our helpful forums.

Now, as much as I love working with computers, getting to know all about PCs, building them, configuring them, gaming on them, and more recently, overclocking thumb.gif I am a complete mobile phone idiot.

For the past few years I've had a Nokia 6680, which was big, bulky and heavy, wasn't too fond of it. Recently it died on me, gave up trying to fix it and ended up borrowing my brother's phone for a while. Just a few days ago, bought myself one of these new $20 Nokia 105 phones... and I'm telling you, this phone is really growing on me! Its lightweight, very easy to use, and does everything I want it to do: phone calls and text messages.

With that said, I think for a young man 19 years of age, its about time I embrace 21st century technology and get myself one of these smartphones... plus I'm being pushed by family and friends... actually that could quite possibly be the main reason haha. Mum has her Galaxy S3, little brother has his iPod, dad has his iPad mini... heck my granny can't live a day without her iPad.

So, as title suggests, could you please get this smartphone idiot on the path to knowing at least the basics of these phones? I love reading, so please do post any particular articles or stickies which would be helpful.

Thanks in advance smile.gif If possible maybe recommend a good smartphone to get started with? I find it absolutely outrageous to fork out $600 for a Galaxy S3 / iPhone... I just want a nice little budget smartphone that works, preferrably below $200... not more than $250.

Thanks again.

LOL, nice post!

Your first choice is Apple or Android.

Just get an iPhone 5 with a data plan. They're intuitive. They pretty much never break.

And, for me, they're very hard to screw around with. If I had an android phone, with all the stuff you can do, it would be screwed up all the time.

Hi, thanks for replying!

Data plan is out of the question unfortunately. No good offers locally. The way its done here is buying an unlocked phone. I've used Dad's iPad often, so the layout is familiar to me. What about these iPhone 3G / 3GS? They go dirt-cheap on Ebay, around the $80 mark. What's the catch?

I can't seem to find any Android phones that go so cheap on Ebay... and as my sig would suggest... well, I like to fiddle with stuff tongue.gif Then again, I think an $80 used iPhone has me sold, unless I'm missing something.

Look for a Nexus 4?
It's a great phone and yet quite affordable ($299)

I'm using a Galaxy s2 (GT-i9100) and I still love it after 2 years

I'm not a fan of Apple/iPhone.

Don't go with a lower version of the iPhone since they tend to lagg with the new OS. I think a iPhone 4 should still be able to do the trick but I can't guarantee for how long.

Personally I went for a HTC One as my first Smartphone, which is just a amazing phone when it comes to looks and performance. Of course there are other Android options like Nexus 4 like previously stated or a Galaxy S4 - S3. The S3 is still a very good phone till this day.

Both iOS and Android are good but I couldn't stand iTunes anymore so I went with Android! tongue.gif

Why a smartphone if you're not going to get a data plan? That's the whole reason for getting a smartphone.

I have a 3GS with 56 apps loaded. Latest OS. I don't have any lag.

I think I misunderstood you there. I thought by data plan you meant buying the phone on a contract... data plan is the download cap in GBs right?

I think I'll look into the Nexus 4. Bit on the pricey side, but nonetheless great reviews. I would expect the phone to do Web-browsing, Youtube, Facebook and this WhatsApp thing with no problems... I don't care about the games, I've got my sig to do that.

Any opinions on the Nokia Lumia line-up?
