Ductless split A/C system is the best permanent solution. Portable A/C and window units are loud and inefficient. The installation cost for a ductless unit is high though but could be well worth it in the end.

IIRC they're renting, so this isn't a good option. However, I had not heard/seen this type of system before. After a quick bit of research, I think this will be something to keep in mind whenever I own my own home.

A portable AC unit with it's hot exhaust ducted through an insulated duct to a window is going to be the best choice more than likely. A swamp cooler would be a much more efficient choice, however, being in a humid environment, it won't work very well at all.
