Need help on getting audio to headphones the right way

I need some advice on what i should get to get the audio from ps3 (bluray dts/dolby/...etc, games) ,in 5.1 but preferably 7.1, into 3.5mm headphones. Not exactly willing to buy astro's or gaming devices with dolby because they generally suck and are low end headphones selling for mid range price. So what do I need to make that happen? A sound receiver? An audio-video receiver? if so, would a 250$ av receiver suffice? I dont wanna spend 600$ for something that i pass thru audio.
So need HD audio delivered in 7.1 into AD700's, or prolly some 598's

Sorry mate, but you can't send surround sound through a single 3.5mm jack.

Every channel has it's own 3.5 jack. That's why you have Green (Front left & right), Orange (Center and subwoofer), Black (Rear left & right) and Grey (Side speakers).

If you want surround in your headphones, you're going to have to get a pair that use a digital signal to send all channels at once. Probably SPDIF or USB.

yes i know 3.5mm is analog and anything above 2.0 channels is digital, but av receivers or DAC's do the job no? i was just wondering which ones to get

Well NOT entirely accurate.. anything above 2.0 channels can be both analog or digital.. the dacs will not send a 7.1 signal to a Stereo headset.. you would need a 7.1 surround sound headset and I am not even sure they exist for Hometheater setups??

DACS are nothing more than the analog to digital converter they do nothing more then convert the digital to an analog signal.. wink.gif The Codecs are what you might be referring too and they are the HD formats like DTS HD MAster Audio for Blu ray..

I would just get the Dolby ones.. but look around there maybe some good ones out there..
