Backing up a laptop to an internal drive on my desktop PC?

Thread Starter
I have a 160 GB laptop I've been backing it up to a 1 TB external drive.

That seems like a waste of storage space, so I want to repartition the external drive and mount it in my desktop PC.

Would I be able to simply plug my laptop into the back of the PC via USB and back it up to one of my hard drives?

I have never heard of anyone doing this, so I don't know if there's something I'm missing.
Thanks for the input!

I think the easiest thing to do is backup from the laptop to the external HDD, then External HDD to PC...
Alternatively, you can hook the laptop HDD to your PC (internally), if you have the right connectors/convertors.

Both PC and Laptop running same OS? - makes life easier.
You need a "bridged" USB cable - has some circuitry situated at some spot on the cable; ordinary USB cables connect a PC to some peripheral only.
Pending the size of transfered files, you might get better transfer times with an ethernet cable connection - easier, too.
Or connect Wifi direct or through a router.

That's more or less what I do. I have three 2.5" HDDs I used with a small dock for backing up my notebook but I'm retiring two of them and using only the one HDD I take with me when I travel (the only time I use my notebook). My desktop has a 2.5" hot swap bay so when I've done a backup on the remaining HDD (usually right after a trip), I pop it into the swap bay and copy it to a folder in one of the desktop rig's internal HDDs. That HDD then gets the usual multiple backups. I only backup the OS partition's image (and any photos I take on a trip) to my desktop since the data on the notebook is a duplicate of what's on the desktop.
