Wireless USB

Thread Starter
We are turning our "computer" room into a nursery, so now I need to move my main desktop out. I have a few questions.

The wireless router (Verizon FiOs) is staying in the nursery. It will be active and sitting on the window sill. There will no longer be any computer "hard connected" to it through an Ethernet cable.

I am only moving the computer into another room, but don't want to have to do any cable routing and drilling to hard connect. I know this is probably a silly question, but what do I need to do in order to get access to the wireless router with my desktop? Do I just need to purchase a wireless usb adapter?

Also, will all of my devices still connect to the router or does the router actually need 1 device hard connected through a cable? I don't believe it does, but I figured I would ask you guys.

Please recommend a solid wireless usb adapter if that is all I need.

Thanks in advance thumb.gif

EDIT: I am not using, nor did I connect, the Asus Wi-Fi module to my motherboard. I don't think that matters.

It looks like your MB has a wifi chip , you could just use that , or if I´m reading it wrong and for some reason that wifi chip does´nt work, then yes, you just need to find a usb wifi dongle. I´m not sure which one to recommend you over there.

edit , yes your other devices will connect as normal if they have been wireless as well , no need for any hard connection.

USB dongles then to have small antennas. If range is an issue, adding a wireless card with antenna(s) to an empty pcie slot may serve you better.

Since it's a desktop, you should go with something a little more permanent and beefy, not to mention a little more 'OCN' than a USB adapter.

What I think you need is a router flashed with DD-WRT in Repeater Bridge mode.
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge
This router will connect to the verizon router wirelessly, re-transmit a wireless signal into your room, and provide you with 4-5 RJ45 ethernet outlets.

You need to hav ea router in the list of DD-WRT supported routers
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices

The most common that everybody starts with is the Linksys WRT54G line, because they are low price and have external antennas
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linksys_WRT54G_series

Notice the different versions have different amounts of RAM and flash. Most important being the flash as that limits what size build is able to fit. For what you need, just a simple wireless bridge, even the 2MB 'micro' build would do you just fine, so you don't need to spring for the 4MB or 8MB versions. After version 5 in G and Version 4 in GS you can see they drop down to 2MB and most people don't want those, so they go very cheap on ebay. Take for instance this beauty
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Linksys-WRT54G-4-Port-10-100-Wireless-G-Router-WRT54G-V8-Untested-/161088373680?pt=COMP_EN_Routers&hash=item25819d83b0
$13 shipped buy it now
in contrast, early version GS models can be pricey
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Linksys-WRT54GS-v1-1-Wireless-Router-Broad-Band-Ham-Net-BBHN-HSMM-MESH-Node-/151102829427?pt=COMP_EN_Routers&hash=item232e6e3373

you see the $13 one it's a version 8, so you go to the DD-WRT website, supported devices, and follow the installation instructions for that particular model
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_WRT54G_v8.0_%26_v8.2

Then you have a super powerful wireless bridge / router for the price of a USB dongle, just requires a little more planning and forethought

Thanks guys. I went ahead and got this one:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002WBX9C6/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I think it can handle what I need it for, since it's just PC gaming / office use.

I was going to recommend that you look into the Linksys AE3000 as it a beast of a USB Wifi card but you decided to go the cheap route.........................good luck, I hope that adapter you got doesn't burn out on you..................................

It's cheap, so even if it burns out I'm not worried about replacing it. I just wanted something that would work. It's only going to be about 20ft away, so I'm not worried about signal strength.
