anyone else like the fact you don't have to decide what to do in linear games. - Page 2

Well, for myself, i'd have to say that when it comes to replay value...very linear games have a long time in between them. What I mean is that I enjoy them, but after the inital playthrough, I dont find myself wanting to play them again. Instead I would need a different (yet similar) game if my tastes so directed me at the time.

Currently though I've been looking for a good game with a high replay value...mainly cause it gets expensive to buy a bunch of new games all the time. Not to say that demos dont help, the field is just so big sometimes : P

hmm.. takes the fun out of exploring IMO. I feel as though the MMO genre gave way to linear games. I guess the logic is that if people wanted to play exploration games, they'd be on an MMO.

Yeah I like linear games and like replaying them. Tho I most like sorta "open" linear games like riddick, The Darkness, Mafia etc

IMO, games need some linearity to maximize itself in story telling. Sometimes, I'll get too caught up in some side mission and completely forget what I'm supposed to be doing in the first place -_-

Mass Effect is a great example of a games series that balanced story telling and exploration VERY well.

I spend all day at a job where I have to make big decisions about how to fit together the components of a complex, logical system.

When I get home, I don't want to do that anymore...I want a game that only provides me with a few decisions to make, and shows logical consequences in failure. (ie, not: "You failed! Because you weren't especially good at running quickly around the level's complex collision geometry")

Give me an open world, guns, swords and shields, magic, loot, 100+ hours of playtime and tons of exploration any day over a linear game. Let go of my hand and allow me to create my own path. Provide me the freedom of choice. Let me pay for my outcomes, good or bad.

I prefer linear games as well, when you have a certain dedication to a life/work some of us cant put in hours to do one minor thing in a game. Its hard to find a decent linear game anymore.

Uh, what? I have 660+ hours of PLAYING Skyrim, 200 hours of PLAYING Fallout 3, 200 hours of PLAYING Fallout: New Vegas, and those hours are still going up rapidly. More about modding? I never made any mods for them. More about screenshots? I don't take many, nor does my time taking screenshots exceed my time playing these games. If all you do is make mods for them, I applaud your dedication. If all you do is take screenshots in them, then you're a weird guy.

I'm strictly talking about others, not myself.

Final Fantasy XIII is a reasonable example.

I agree with all of these comments. Sometimes I like to play a linear game that has a good ending and sometimes I like to get lost in games like Skyrim, although I haven't finished it yet and don't think I will. GTA is more of a open world game that I can sit down and play, get lost in and finish it. I've become more aware lately that I'm enjoying indie games more so than AAA blockbuster release games.
