FX 4100 Idiot overclock guide and others

Dear all,

A couple of things

FX 4100
Asus M5A88-M
8 Gb ram of DDR3 666mhz ram (cant remmeber model, is performance)
AMD HD7770 (Soon to be Asus 670)
128 gb SSD

1)
MY HD 7770 display driver keeps crashing for no reason - in game, out of game etc , and yes the drivers are up to date

2)
I am starting a youtube channel, and have ordered a Asus 670, but worried by FX 4100 ( i knwo its not great for games) will bottleneck it, I have been told Overclocking would help

CAN I PLEASE HAVE AN IDIOTS, STEP BY STEP GUIDE FOR MY MOBO (Asus M5A88-M) as all other guides ahve been for other Motherboards and my bios is really really crap, not even pc health section

And yes bios is up to date tongue.gif

Even if your gpu drivers are up to date there is no guarantee the the newest drivers are not faulty as is always the case. Please only use WHQL drivers and not the beat ones. Revert to previous drivers which din't give rise to crashes.
Coming to cpu overclocking your mobo looks good enough to get a decent overclock. Keep upping your multi until you crash and then increase cpu volts in increments of 0.02v. From what I think, your cpu will hold back your gpu buy quite a bit. Overclocking would help but even after that you might not be able to utilize all of your gpu power.
Have a look at this video. It's quite good. Shows how badly gpu's can get bottlenecked.

This means nothing to me ahah, could you explain please, i really do need a step by step guide :/

Also, how much does overclocking shorten the lifespan of a CPU?

It doesn't get much simpler. If you can't do the above, perhaps you shouldn't be overclocking.

Overclocking with the multiplier will shorten the life of your CPU from 32 years to 29 years and 10 months ... about.

I am aware that that is "simple" however, the bios is very odd and is not laid out normally. Is AMD overdrive useable for this?

Overclocking through software cause instability at times. Always use the bios.

If you're not willing to at least try it, we can't help you.
Each BIOS between boards is at least a little different, some more so than others - If you're not willing to figure it out and take the advice being offered, stop asking for help because it doesn't do any good to make suggestions that are not followed. We've all ran into the odd BIOS here and there, just take the time to see what you have and learn how to tweak it because we can't do it for you.

Just try the suggested method above.

As for the rest, AMD overdrive will work but as stated, it's better to do it in the BIOS rather than through software, it's possible to bork your setup using it. As for what GHz to expect, it's entirely a crapshoot - Each chip along with things such as the board, RAM used, ect act differently and no two behave the exact same way.

OK - With a 4100 on air, I'd have to say at least 4.4 with all else being good and temps within tolerance. These FX chips don't need alot of overvolting to clock up and you'd only need to volt it up hard to reach speeds approaching 4.6 or better, again temps must also be OK while doing it.
