Problems with installing ubuntu 12 with ati GPU

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I very new to the world of linux, I've played around a little with ubuntu in the past but would like to give it a more serious attempt, and I'm falling at the first hurdle.

I dont deem to have any problems with the install (installing from a bootable USB stick) the problems start as soon as ubuntu starts to load up after a reeboot.

I get one of two screens, Either a beige colored screen with lines running down it or the ubuntu default wallpaper but not centered properly (the far right of the screen is in the middle of my monitor and I can move my mouse off of the left edge and it appears on the right hand side!)

while all this is happening my gpu fan is going crazy whith the screen stuck as described above. I did get it to boot to desktop a few times with ubuntu 13 installed but always had the same problem with the gpu getting hot for no reason.

Could anybody talk me through the process of installing ununtu 12 with an ati gpu please?

which GPU and what version of Ubuntu? there is no '12' so I'm guessing you mean 12.04 or 12.10, but both of those are updated by release 13.04, so unless you need one of the 12.**s for a certain reason, use 13.04. are again, GPU model. Since the 'process' of install is no different for 'ati' GPUs, it could be a bug so model number (as well as your general set up) would help. Have you tried any other distros? is your machine overclocked in any way?
