Portable Storage HDD Causes....

Thread Starter
Hello everyone,

My brother was on his Windows XP SP3 computer and he disconnected a portable storage HDD while it was accessing, can this cause a computer to then crash repeatedly over and over again? I would understand if it were the main C drive, but a storage HDD?
I um... what.

If your asking for help, you need to be a lot more specific than "can this cause crash".

I am with you. headscratch.gif

If you just take a drive out of the system (external) without ejecting it, you should not have an issue at all. However, XP is strange and requires drives to be ejected, but this should not cause an issue. If you are having a problem, then there may be something more going. We need more of an explanation than an vague question and information.

Well all I know is when my brother disconnected the backup storage USB 2.0 HDD when it was in use, it caused a looping loading Window crash cycle that repeated until powering down. When I performed the Recovery feature using the OS disc (Windows XP) it stated there were missing Windows files, once I perform the repair everything was back to normal. We are afraid to reconnect this storage HDD not knowing enough about what caused the crash!

The reason why the backup storage USB 2.0 HDD was connected in the first place was because photos from Africa were missing from My Pictures.

There is a remote possibility (since you mentioned that files were missing) that the C:\ drive may be failing.  I suggest checking its SMART status with a program like CrystalDiskInfo.

Well, I'd assume if any error were to occur, it'd be with the external hard drive. Maybe a corrupt file or two. But would it affect your desktop? I'd have to assume the possibility since it's too much of a coincidence.

Make sure his windows is updated.
Also, get those Africa photos on Dropbox or Google storage! You can't afford to lose those pictures just because of a faulty external drive!

Make sure your data is safe and backed up, then grab HD Tune and run an error scan on the C drive. Also check the Drive Health.
