is it the 770 or the 680?

What's the difference!

To be more helpful, the 770 is probably the closest competitor to the 7970 (as the 680 is from a previous generation.)

The 770 is the same as the 680, but with some optimisations.

can the 7970 beat the 770?

Depends on the title. There are plenty of published benchmarks on the web.

Imo 7970 is on an island right now with no real competition. Why would you consider a slower 770 that costs 50 bucks more?

Titan >= 780 > 7970 > 770 >= 680 > 7950 >= 670 > 760 >= 7870 >= 660Ti > etc

It all depends on the title, benchmark, and what variant of the card you're running...

HD 7970 Ghz (1050 mhz) = GTX 770(1150 mhz). so an average clocking HD 7970 at 1150 mhz will match a average clocking GTX 770 at 1250 mhz. a golden HD 7970 at 1.3 ghz pretty much cleans up winning the majority and is faster on average than even a golden GTX 770 at 1.35 ghz. thats why HD 7970 is considered the faster chip.

Unfortunately it looks like the 770 is binned well enough that 1300+ cards are a lot more common than 1300+ 7970s. With the new drivers out I would go for a 7970, you can't really beat superior hardware at a cheaper price right now. I just moved back to a pair of brand new 7950's that cost me $440 for the pair at a local store after rebates.
