80 Degree CPU - help please?

Thread Starter
My CPU ranges between 72 to 80+ degrees Celsius, varying based on cpu usage. I opened the side of the case, and it hasn't made a difference.

My CPU is an AMD Barton (Athlon XP) 3000+ (~2.2 GHz), and I have 1024 MB of ram.

The fan on the CPU is supposedly running at 4326 RPM (at the moment, at least).

It's been pretty hot since I got it, but it seems like it's getting worse. I'm not sure if this is relevant or normal, but some slightly older games (like Diablo 2, for example) use ~100% of the CPU (is that normal for games when your system should be able to easily run it?) and it obviously starts getting even hotter then.

uh.... change the thermal paste. Clean your HS and invest in a new one.

Check to see if it's actually SPINNING all the time.

Also check to see if it's seated on the CPU properly

Yeah, it's spinning all the time... and it looks like it's seated properly.

I don't really know anything about thermal paste, but I'll try looking into that, thanks.

When was the last time you re-seated your HSF?

IMHO it would be wise to removeHSF , thoroughly clean the IHS and the HSF footprint with a xylene-based cleaner or alcohol, the re-seat with AS5.

Yeah, I think I figured out the problem... My dad put this computer together a couple years ago as a birthday present, but I don't think he used any thermal paste...

I ordered some Arctic Silver paste, I'll try cleaning the heatsink and stuff when it arrives. Thanks for the advice.

It's been running for 2 years w/o TIC ?!?!?!?

That is one stout processor! hmmm.... maybe using AS5 will ruin it - jk

I know someone who ran a Northwood at 50- degrees for 3 years without Thermal Interface Material. It will still work, jsut run a bit hotter.
