3 mobos to choose from

Thread Starter
Hi guys, I'm new to desktops, and this is my first thread and post here.
I am looking to buy a new computer with a Core2Duo E6300.

I have 3 mobos to choose from, each increasing in price.

ASUS SKT-775 P5VD2-MX S/V/L M-ATX 1066
ASUS SKT-775 P5L-VM 1394 S/V/L M-ATX
ASUS SKT-775 P5B S/L 1066FSB

Thing is, i don't know anything about mobos. Which is why i turn to you guys. Hope you can help me out.

I would like to know what they do. I plan to overclock in the future, and I hope i won't make any mistakes in choosing the right mobo. I don't have to have that E6300. Maybe something better.

I plan to use a ASUS 256MB RADEON X1950PRO TV/DVI PCI-E.

Please advise.

Hello, and welcome to Overclock.net!

out of those choices, I'd say the P5B. While is not a great overclocker, I sure wouldn't recommend an E6300 nor E6400 but an E6600.

But since that you live in the UK, I'd highly recommend the GIGABYTE DS3 or GIGABYTE DS4 for a Core 2 Duo E63 or E64 hundred. With the DSX, you'll be able to achieve a much higher overclocking frequency than the P5B.

As for RAM? Any DDR2 800 will do, but I recommend something with CAS 4-4-4-12 with less than 2.2v minimum for such set-up.

Excuse me, I'm not too familiar with those.
Can you possibly show links to those products?

Not familiar with GIGABYTE, k, here they are:

DS3 rev1.0: http://www.gigabyte-usa.com/Products...me=GA-965P-DS3

DS3 rev2.0: http://www.gigabyte-usa.com/Products...me=GA-965P-DS3

DS4 rev1.0: http://tw.giga-byte.com/Products/Mot...me=GA-965P-DS4

DS4 rev2.0: http://tw.giga-byte.com/Products/Mot...me=GA-965G-DS4

Now, the rev2.0 board might be out might be not. Here in the U.S. the DS4 is not for sale but in Europe is, and for overclocking, they're just as good as the ASUS P5B, if not better.

Now, if you mean ASUS P5B Deluxe, then go with that one, just that it's going to be a little more expensive.

I see. What's all this 4-4-4-12 ram and 2.2v jargon?

Those are ram timings and CPU voltage...
RAM Timings : the tighter (lower) the better, and the voltage is way to adjust your system's stability, in this case, the RAMs

no he was talking about the stock voltage of the ram, try to find ram that has timings of 4-4-4-12 which is better then say 5-5-5-15 stock, plus you want the stock volts fo the ram to be lower like usually 4-4-4-12 at 1.9 v is better then 4-4-4-12 at 2.2v givent hat they are running at the same speed

When you say DDR2 800, does that stand for 800mhz?

Also, I'm thinking of building my first desktop. However, I'm not familiar with what parts to buy. Are connecting cables included? Are there instructions to first time building?
