can't setup RAID 0 with 2x 4 TB Seagate drives

Thread Starter
as the title said... I just bought 2 new HDDs (Seagate 4 TB drives, the 5900 rpm ones), installed on my MSI X79A GD65 (8D) board, and I set up a new RAID volume just like how I set up my SSDs for my OS drive. however, when I got to Windows, the drives are detected separately and Windows offered me to initialize the drives.

back then, after I set up my SSDs in RAID 0, they're detected as a single drive in Windows, and I expected the same thing. did I go wrong somewhere?

It's not what you asked, but is there a reason you are RAIDing 4 TB drives in a stripe?
Thread Starter
just for the lulz... biggrin.gif

nah, I just prefer having less number of partitions to manage, so instead of two separate 4 TBs why not a single 8 TB. I know that there are good reasons not to stripe drives, but my case (Corsair 540) only has two 3.5 bays, and it's not like I'm getting a RAID card in near future.

actually I'm not really bothered with having two of them set up separately, but I'm just curious. if it's the drives' fault, I can still return them for exchange, and if it's my fault, I get something new to learn. wink.gif

Err I have the same drives set up as Raid 1 and it shows up as one drive in Windows.
Are you absolutely sure you are going through the RAID manager in BIOS (I think it's CTRL+I) and creating the Raid volume properly? Maybe try different stripe sizes? Are the drives connected to different controllers i.e Intel and Asmedia/Marvel?

Just use Windows Software Raid. It works just as well as hardware. Tested it myself. No performance loss.

I think I did, the stripe size was 128K, I wonder what's wrong.

I did consider that, but I haven't done any reading on that, so thanks for the link. (+rep)

haha indeed, I do have backup for the important stuffs (ext HDDs, online), these drives are just for my movie, music, and game collection, which I wouldn't mind losing, since I can just download/rip them again.

as I mentioned before, I just like to see less partitions, easier to manage... besides I'd hate it if I have to separate a certain collection (let's say games) once it exceeds 4 TB. I'll have to split them to two drives, and I just think that's not neat. biggrin.gif
