I may just very well take kill's advice and upgrade that rig to W7.

One more thing you could try is enabling the Windows Firewall.  In Windows XP, I always disabled it and its related services for computers on our private (trusted) network.  However, in Windows 7 (and probably Vista too), I cannot do that without causing random problems, like being totally unable to share printers.  It may seem counter-intuitive, but try re-enabling the Windows Firewall.  After enabling the Windows Firewall, go to the Network and Sharing Center and make sure that the various settings (network discovery, file sharing, password protected sharing, etc.) are set correctly for your use.  Then see if you can share the drive(s).

If you have disabled the Firewall via the Service Control Manager, here are services to double-check:
  • Base Filtering Engine, Automatic
  • IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules, Automatic
  • IPsec Policy Agent, Automatic
  • Windows Firewall, Automatic

I hope that if you upgrade to Windows 7, that the issue doesn't get "upgraded" to the new OS during the upgrade!
