Broken CD/DVD Drivers

Thread Starter
I was recently contracted by my grandfather: "Here's $40, can you fix my computer?"

Someone upgraded his HP desktop from Windows Vista to Windows 7, which resulted in a CD/DVD drive that is not compatible with Windows 7. I tried replacing and disabling and doing everything to the drivers, but his DVD drive was just not compatible. I then went to the store and bought an external LG USB CD/DVD drive, but again, his drivers are causing issues.

I assume that I need to repair his Windows 7 installation, but I a) don't have a Windows 32-bit install disk and b) even if I did, it wouldn't be readable by any of his DVD drives.

I have a USB drive, but I have Windows 7 64-bit, so I don't know if creating a repair thing on my USB flash drive would help.

So:

Is there any way to get a 32-bit Windows 7 bootable USB installer/repair tool from a 64-bit device?

Take the external CD/DVD drive back. Go to Newegg or your other favorite online etailer and spend $20 on a compatible internal cd/dvd drive. Make sure you get one with the correct interface for the motherboard (IDE or SATA).

Remove old internal drive. Install new internal drive. If your HP has one of those funky cd/dvd facia plates on it, often times you can swap it over to the new cd/dvd drive so it looks completely stock with the HP case.

Boot, let W7 install the generic drivers and you should be good to go.

If you go to Device Manager can you see the DVD drive? If so do this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 (Do the manual steps. Fix-it rarely works if ever.)

This is a classic upgrade issue. Optical driver disappearing or not working after performing an upgrade.
