7970 issues please help :(

Hi everyone. Today I had the incredible idea of hooking my PC up to my new television and see how much better gaming would be. Here's where it went downhill...

I hooked my PC up to my tv using HDMI (usually use DVI when connected to my monitor). I also plugged in my USB wifi adapter since I wasn't close to an ethernet port. Because I was on the 13.4 drivers and I haven't gamed in a while, I thought I'd install the new 13.8 beta 2 ones. I launched the 13.8b2 exe and chose uninstall to remove my old drivers. Then I rebooted and installed the new ones, then rebooted again. I played some Far Cry 3, Battlefield 3, and Diablo 3 without any problems. Somewhere in the middle of this I turned the computer off and began downloading a torrent in uTorrent. About an hour later I noticed that I had about 20m left of downloading. I figured I'd play some Far Cry 3 while I wait. I launch the game and my fps went from my usual ~60fps to ~30!!!!

I launched BF3. I play with vsync and almost never drop below 60fps and I'm getting 30-40fps with 99% GPU usage!!!!!!

I checked my temps and nothing is wrong.

I uninstall 13.8b2 in control panel and install 13.4 drivers back. SAME issue. So, I use BradleyW's excellent tutorial on uninstalling AMD drivers and do a fresh clean install of 13.8beta 2 again and..... THE SAME PROBLEMS :\

I have no idea what to do now other than do a clean install of Windows which I don't feel like doing since my install is only a few months old.

Any suggestions?

what's the resolution on the tv? because the higher the resolution = requires more power from the graphics card.

I got BSOD error from just attempting to install 13.8-2 and had to fresh install last night because of it. I tried to warn people the drivers a broken but everyone shot me down because it went ok for them.

It's pretty much too late now and you may as well fresh install. Any last ditch attempts of things like driver sweeper are unlikely to solve anything, if not make it worse in my experience.

I know it sucks, I'm currently downloading 30GB worth of Battlefield 3 at 400 Kb/s after this mistake of installing these drivers, plus more.

Also, are you comparing your HDTV's FPS to your lower res monitor FPS?

I had some wacky problems with 13.8 beta drivers too. It made my card not recognize displays correctly and somehow it forced a higher refresh rate than my monitor could handle. Terrible screen tearing until I reinstalled.

It's a 55" Samsung Full Array LED backlit television. With the right adjustments, the picture is so much better than it is out of the box.

I didn't want to spend the extra for a smart TV and didn't want an edge lit. I got it for about $900 at Costco, well worth the price.

It certainly is fun to game on... When my computer is working mad.gif
