EVGA GTX 780 ACX cooler vs gtx 780 with Accelero Xtreme III

Thread Starter
Hey guys. Does anybody have results as to which is better or know where to find them? I cannot find them anywhere. I going to be getting the gtx 780 FTW dual bios with ACX cooler. mainly for the dual bios though. I am curious to know if the Xtreme III is better than the ACX cooler. In the past, the Xtreme III has been better than every single GPU aftermarket cooler there has been from any company (at least from what I have read, correct me if I am wrong), but is it better than the highly talked about, highly recommended ACX cooler? If so, im popping that sucker off and slapping the Xtreme III on it.

Accelero Xtreme III is not compatible with 780 GTX, although Arctic claims otherwise. I installed Xtreme III on my 780 GTX and I’m still in trouble and the same problem is reported on several forums. So I strongly suggest avoiding Xtreme III for the moment.

Hardware wise it is easy to install Xtreme III on 780 GTX. But when you connect your Xtreme’s fan header to 780 GTX then fans start to run in endless loop of irritation. They will speed up to the max and in few seconds start to slow down. And this cycle is repeated endlessly. As a result Xtreme III makes a really lot of fan noise in every 15 seconds. And it will really get on your nerves. Especially if you have a quiet case and during idle or low intensity tasks – the fan noise will racket over every other component in your computer.

Current work-around is to connect Xtreme fans either to motherboard or directly to PSU using molex connector. I fixed fans to PSU using molex. This got rid of the high pitch – low pitch cycle and fixed the fans on constant speed. But it also means now PWM fan control and I’m sure that ACX would be a lot quieter in idle.

This issue is reported on number of forums. Current best guess is that Xtreme III and 780 GTX 4-pin fan headers have somehow different pin configurations. Might be as the HW Monitor also gets confused by Xtreme and reports fan speeds anywhere between 1,000RPM and 300K RPM (yes 300,000 RPM!). And in addition to everything else Arctic support keeps their mouth 100% shut. I have sent them several support requests with absolutely no feedback and in forums others have reported similar support levels. So Arctic knows about the problems, but refuses to say anything and still claims that Xtreme III is compatible with 780 GTX.

In short – if you have 780 GTX, keep away from Accelero Xtreme III !

I have one on a dcii780 i took off the backplate and i had made some custom vrm heatsinks...it's not bad at all.
Of coarse i would never bother pluging in the fan to the card since alot of card bios will be an issue.wink.gif
