Can I add Corsair Vengeance to my Crucial Ballistix?

A friend of mine wants to upgrade to a higher RAM speed, and if he does he will no longer need his current 8GB DDR3-1600 Vengeance (CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9). I currently have 8GB DDR3-1600 Crucial Ballistix Elite (BLE4G3D1608DE1TX0).

Both of these are 2x4GB kits and my ASRock Z87 Extreme6 has four DIMM slots. I will have the opportunity to buy this memory off of him if it is compatible with my system.

The part that concerns me is a couple of the numbers coming out of AIDA64 when we looked at our current memory. Here are screenshots of both of our AIDA64 pages:

Will his memory be compatible with my computer and my current memory?

Regardless of whether it'll work or not, I would never mix & match RAM.

Is there a technical reason for that, or is it just personal preference? I seem to max out my RAM fairly often and some extra would be nice.

I would agree with you. I wouldn't either.

Though it is looked down upon to mix RAM. I have done it before in my old machine and it continued to run fine and read the RAM. It is just up to you to risk trying and plugging it in.

By "risk," are you implying that something bad could potentially happen? Normally I'm all for trying things and hoping for the best, but if there's a chance of hardware damage I don't really know.

Honestly I don't think it would harm your computer. It would just not read as compatible and boot up. Which then you can just solve by taking out the RAM. I am not a professional but that is what I believe would be the case if incompatible RAM. If he is your friend just ask him to let you test it out first and if it does work pay him, if not have him sell it to someone else.

That's what I hoped you would say! I'll just ask to try it before buying as I'm sure he won't have a problem with that.

Thanks to everybody for their input!
