Laptop/notebook screen standards discussion

Thread Starter
It seems to me that the world of laptop screens is full of meaningless numbers and model number codes for me.
I would like to know if I can go on ebay and buy a laptop screen not searching for the notebook's model I want to use it on, but based on the specifications of the screen.

Is this possible? How do I do it?

For example, my little DM1 has just lost it's screen. For now I know it uses the same screen for at least the dm1-1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 series.
All of them are the same 11.6 by default (apparently).
But why can't I buy a 15 incher and plug on it if I wanted to? Is it possible? I don't know for now because I don't really know anything about them, what 40 pins means, if there is different kinds of 40 pins, what kind of connectors, cables, energy supplying, etc, etc, etc.

Some knowledge please!

It's the internal screen.

I already know that, I want to know why.
I want to learn about the connectivity standards, to be more precise, as bezel size or screen size could be easily modded.

It amazes me that nobody talks about this here on OCN.

Are you talking about replacing the screen itself inside the laptop, the internal screen? You are going to need an EXACT replacement in most cases. Just like desktop LCD monitors, there are a number of panel producers and models, but the location of the video interface, the power supply connections, and panel thickness/mounting frame, and overall bezel dimensions vary considerably from manufacturer to manufacturer, model to model.

In short, if your laptop panel breaks and you need to replace it - you're going to need an EXACT replacement, not an approximate one. As for replacing a working one with a "better" or more capable one, you're probably out of luck. Aside from a few larger gaming laptops that have a choice of 120 Hz 3D capable panel and a 60 Hz non-3D panel, you probably have no options for replacing them with something else. In the 3D vs non-3D dilemma, you also have the IR emitter to worry about for synchronizing 3D glasses.

Why? Because it's impractical to mod another screen in. You'd not only ruin the laptop physically but you'd have a fairly high chance of frying something else on the machine.
