To be fair IIRC the cost of a 13" 1920x1200 similar or higher resolution screen is much more expensive than a 5" screen. I mean how much does a 1920x1080 50inch screen cost compared to a 20inch? Now let us add in quality and features like IPS, AMOLED, and so on....then think about the limited capacity of the average consumer and so they are indifferent mostly when it comes to laptop screens but extremely price sensitive on laptops. The inverse is almost the scenario with smartphones because of the subsidized nature of that market.
Not everything is the business's fault people. You as a consumer are partly to blame for market issues. Just look at the Ubuntu Edge....failed project but would have shamed phones for years to come. It simply came down to the consumer's failure (for the most part). If you want the market to improve and offer better choices/prices/etc then you need to make that clear and shape the market from your side of the equation.
