[SOLVED] How to choose a quiet and adequate cooler for i7 4770k Haswell build?

Hey guys,

thanks to some of the other members I already picked a mainboard for my new Haswell build.
I am quite confused as to which cooler to get though (for OCing i7 4770k).
I've read up a good bit about coolers and installation but how can I start narrowing down the selection? The choice is massive! headscratch.gif

Basically I just want to chose a cooler that will be able to cool my i7 4770k CPU reasonably quietly when I OC it to say 4.2-4.4GHz and when I play BF3 smile.gif It doesn't have to be noiseless under load, since I am wearing headphones when playing.

I would love to hear your experience in how you went about choosing your cooler, even more so than specific models.

Obviously once I have my selection I will check whether they are compatible with my mobo (Giga Z87X-UD3H).
My budget is like max €80 or like $110.
I have 4 case fans btw.

Any help much appreciated. smile.gif

Can't really recommend anything with no information of your build... like what case are you using?

Ah ok,
I am going for a Haswell build with i7 4770k, Giga ATX Z87X-UD3H mobo and a GTX670 OC 2gb in a Bitfenix Shinobi, although if the case is too narrow I could get another one.

Get the Bitfenix Ronin if you'd like the same aesthetics as the Shinobi. Its built far better than the Shinobi, and its at a solid price, although it is a NCIX exclusive currently for the next few weeks.

I've got my 4770k overclocked to 4.6ghz stable at 1.279v with a cooler master hyper 212 evo and it stays at about 82-85 celcius while using prime95. the max temp for these chips is around 95c, the cutoff point is 100c but i wouldn't push it that far.

My chip could be considered as one of the "above average" overclocking chips, but i think that has proven to be the result with as late of build number possible. I got mine from newegg a month and a half ago.

edit: my case is a corsair c70 and the cooler fits just fine, however my case is 9.13" wide, that one is 8.07". it is a large cooler. I'm not sure if that case has all of the cable management space behind the motherboard like mine does, but that alone could make up the extra inch. I could do some better measuring if needed. reading through newegg reviews, i havent seen any "wont fit in my case" scenarios, but there are a ton of reviews. sounds more like user error during install and a couple fans going bad (easy peasy to replace anyways) it is an excellent cooler.
