Mario and Zelda ect are the face of Nintendo. Sony and Microsoft only wish they had IP's as strong as Mario and Zelda. Nintendo's IPs are what makes them money and these games sell exceptionally well. The problem is third parties not having a strong presence on Nintendo hardware which turns Nintendo hardware into Mario and Zelda boxes.
Mario isn't the problem. Nintendo's ecosystem isn't the problem. Their relationship with third parties is the problem. Nintendo's marketing is the problem. Nintendo's own ecosystem is good enough to support hardware with a lack of third party content. Try that with Playstation or XBOX and watch what happens.
Your forgetting Nintendo is a gaming only company and they are loaded. The highest rated best selling games of all time. Sony on the other hand is in the hole as a company and is in fact smaller than Nintendo despite the many consumer electronics they make.
Microsoft we all that story. They throw their weight wherever they wan't to go. Can't beat em, buy em. Microsoft is a Bull in a china shop. Turn you back on them for a second and they will grab your wallet so fast you won't know what hit you.
Yes Sony and MS wishes they had a mascot with so much nostalgia behind them but lets get real here. In the world where money talks and grown ups actually exist and business are in it to make money. I rather as a company have a console that doesn't have weak software attachment rate, lackluster developer support, and a nonexistent online component, and management that looks like they have their heads up their bums.
The Wii U ATM is a sales failure and only die hard N fanboys will defend it to death that it isn't. The PS4 is coming out November the 15th and only costing FIFTY freaking more dollars in the USA and has a 500GB Storage on board. Not the woeful 32GB or the useless 8GB that 90% is already reserved for the system. Not only that its packing heavy hardware that most developers are already familiar with and online carry over support out of the gate. The PS4 world wide has over ONE MILLION preorders. The Wii U came out Nov of last year and has only shipped around 4 Million consoles, and have sold around 3.6 million. That's sad. And reports flooding that most shops in Europe selling them below MSRP and are they flying off the shelves? Nope. And retailers no longer taking orders for the basic model or reducing shipment as much as they can. No compelling software, third party dropping support (EA is gone, Ubisoft going soft, Activision is still in it but isn't focused on them), no real leadership of online (which is understandable for a Japanese company as the Japanese aren't open arm like the western world when it comes to social media).
But back to the whole IP thing. I don't have rose tinted glasses anymore. Nintendo's development time takes to damn long, and in turn they have drought like seasons where one year you get two 1st party games and the next two nothing. Its not a smart way to do business.

The whole point in playing a Mario and Zelda game is the fact that there actually IS a Mario and Zelda game to play..
I'm gonna get Wind Waker HD since I enjoyed that game but that isn't a new Zelda game. And Mario hasn't been really innovative and fun to me to play since Mario 64.

No and yes.
1. The Cell Processor was hard to develop for
2. You have lazy developers and slave driving publishers that only care about the bottom line
3. The PS3 had DEDICATED 256MB of graphics RAM and 256MB of system RAM vs the Xbox 360s shared 512MB of RAM
This time it should be equal across the board, and developers that aren't lazy POS (I'm looking at you outsourcing Platinum Games) should have better looking games on the PS4, and just like during the PS3 vs 360 the 1st party exclusive games on the PS4 is gonna blow the XBone's 1st party games in terms of graphics and fluid performance.Edited by Rei86 - 8/21/13 at 10:14pm
