Hey OCN! I'm in a predicament!

I see all these used GTX 780's for sale - $575, $550, right around there which tempts me to get one, but I'm trying to convince myself to wait it out and get a 9970 when they release. Just wondering, what would you do, buy a used reference 780, or a new reference 9970 when they release? Waterblocks will be put on it, but I'm just decided which to get now.

I'm not a fanboy of either brand, I've had both a 7850 and a GTX 670, and both brands have their ups and downs, but I really don't care eitherway, AMD or NVIDIA.

So, what do you think?

Couldn't hurt to wait it's only a month away till the reveal. The 9000 series won't be that must better then the 780 anyways it's still based off 28nm and who knows if nivdia feel pressure then you might even get a cheaper 780. 780 will be able to run games at 1440p max settings for awhile as it is.......

The HD 9970 / HD 9950 should be out by early - mid Oct. press event is sep 25th. 2 - 3 weeks from that you can expect launch reviews / retail availability

it wouldn't hurt to wait. the news doing the rounds is its a big improvement over HD 7970 Ghz. around 35 - 40%. so its better you wait and see what the results are. also BF4 is going to bundled with these cards.

If you can get a used GTX 780 at a good price, I doubt a new 9970 is going to beat that by much if at all in terms of performance/price.

IMO do not put your money at this point on the GTX 780. wait and see how HD 9970 performs first. Less than two months to go ...

Yes my motherboard supports it, but I'd rather have a single powerful card than two not so powerful cards, it just makes the lifecycle of the card longer I find to start with a single high powered card then crossifre/SLI it.

I'm alright paying $550 or so for the performance that a GTX 780 offers, or a bit more, which will be the 9970.

And I wouldn't be crossfiring/SLI the card right off the bat, probably a year or a year and a half later, and the prices have dropped a bit and I need/want the extra power.

I'm also a folder so this equipment will be used for folding, and honestly more power = better in folding.

Cause you mentioned folding...

I just finished the Foldathon on my EVGA 780 ACX. "out of the box"
~150k PPD with ~30k credit roughly every 4-5 hours using the beta WU's.
Running stock the temps didn't get above 74'c at the hottest point, mostly staying about 70'c.

Absolutely crushes games, no sweat.

That is my plan to SLI another 780 sometime in the future, then expand to a 3 monitor setup... OR 4K if that market gets going.

Was originally going for the gtx 780.
But i wanted more than 3GB ram for massive game mods and future proofing.
So i decided to wait for the AMD HD-9970.

If it ends up being better than the 780, with extra ram thats great.
If it ends up being a bust i'll just go with the 780.

And when the AMD cards are released Nvidia prices may also drop.
AMD cards are also generally priced lower when compared to Nvidia.

No harm in waiting unless you urgently need the card.

Hope this helps.

Wait

I would wait until the new series comes out. Its rumored that they will come out under 600 bucks, and if they are on par with a 780, new and used 780 prices are going to drop. You have a good card today, you shouldn't need to rush.
