If you haven't got it working yet, try booting your computer normally without connecting the Dell's HDD. When your computer has finished booting, put it into standby, wait for the power to switch off, and then connect the Dell's HDD. Then wake up your computer and see if it detects the HDD without freezing. I have successfully used this technique many times to quickly connect/swap HDDs with either IDE or SATA connections without rebooting the computer.
In my experience, simply hot-swapping a HDD (as someone suggested earlier) usually causes the computer to completely freeze; and, it can also burn out the HDD's controller board (done that).
