X800XL vs X1600Pro - Page 2

The OP asked for cards that are as good or better than the x800xl for $100-$150. The evga 7600gt certainly fills that bill.

An X1600 Pro is not of equal performance then an X800 XL, its slower.

An X800 XL has 16pipelines, an X1600 pro uses a different architecture but you could say it has about the equivalency of 12 pipelines (not actually true but for comparisons sake).

The core speeds are roughly the same, but the X800 XL has much better GDDR3 memory at 500mhz on a 256bit bus where as the X1600 Pro has much less memory bandwith with 400mhz DDR2 memory on a 128bit bus.

Neither card is a very good overclocker, the X800 XL cores don't OC but the memory could squeeze a bit, the X1600 Pro core can squeeze a bit but the maxed out DDR2 memory won't go anywhere.

The only advantage the X1600 Pro has over the X800 XL is SM3.0, but seeing as its performance is too low to enable SM3.0 features really, it doesn't account for much.

All in all the X1600 Pro is a decent lower end gaming card, but if you get it don't expect the same performance as your X800 XL cause it won't deliver.

The X1600Pro will do the job for you in a pinch but try to avoid it.

If you can manage the money a GeForce 7600GT or a Radeon X1800GTO/X1650XT will do wonders for you. They're all in the same performance category with the best performance going to the

1st X1650XT
2nd X1800GTO
3rd 7600GT

As stated above, the 1600 is not an improvement over the 800xl that you have in your specs. I have an x800xl and it plays most games pretty well. I'm thinking of upgrading to a 1900GT (Newegg for $149) mostly for the VIVO and because the price is really cheap. If I were you, I would save my cash and spend my dough on a videocard that is a necessary upgrade. The prices on the midlevel cards will only go down as the DX10 cards become more popular, so it might be possible to pick up a nice videocard for a really good price. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I will go with the X1800GTO. Newegg has it for $119.99 plus shipping. The main reason I was asking is a buddy of mine has an X1600 that he would sell me but if its not comparable to the X800 I have, then it seems I would be downgrading instead of upgrading.

Thanks again guys.

Thanks for that info. Like I said above, I will be getting the X1800GTO. It seems to be the best bang for the buck.
