i just cannot comprehend and need some help - Page 2

leave it to me to throw a monkey wrench into this...

i got two more sticks of ram to get me up to 8gb and thought they were the same. looking at teh specs, they are slightly different:

corsair XMS2 DDR2 CM2X2048-8500C7 - (on the back it says 2.00V ver4.1. 7-7-7-20, 1066MHz XMS2-8500). my previous ram is

corsair XMS2 DDR2 CM2X2048-8500C5 - on the back it says 2.10V ver3.1. 5-5-5-15, 1066MHz XMS2-8500)

installed and it won't boot OC'd. the CPU resets itself to stock values. are these two types of almost identical ram incompatible? is there somewhere else that needs tweaking to get 8gb ram and still be able to OC?

man, this all has my head hurting. any help is appreciated and thanks

The wildly different timings would throw a massive wrench into the works. if its just a MAME cabinet i doubt you need 8 gigs so pull the new sticks out. Have you tried bumping the CPU voltage a touch to see if it passes Prime 95?

so, i think i'm getting closer but still not quite there.

In my experience that error message is memory related. I had the same issue trying to achieve a 4.0GHz OC on my 1100t BE and I downclocked my RAM from 1600MHz to 1333MHz which made my OC stable. Sucked having to downclock my RAM but doing this gave me a little wiggle room on tightening the timings.

ETA: Mixing RAM modules with different specs is generally not a good idea because it may cause issues. Especially when overclocking. Either run the best pair or buy another pair to have a matching 8gb kit.

thank you all for the feedback, i sincerely appreciate it.

it is a MAME cab but i do use it for other things on occasion (video outputs to secondary screen). good news, sort of, i changed one setting in the BIOS. i changed the below to "auto" and it's now booting up OC'd with the full 8gb.

"DRAM Speed" to 333/800 (i set this to auto).

just out of curiosity, how much of a performance boost do you really see by OC RAM?

i'm running my first 10 pass with limx and the new RAM and will report back what happens.

hell, i was so desperate i looked into updating my BIOS but all the links on the DFI site for the utilities are 404.

i'm sure one of these days all this OC talk will make sense but man, right now? total gibberish. so i really am thankful for the help guys.

on a side note, i am really proud of my mame build so if anyone is interested, check the link. it's two pages long, lots of pics as i am always adding something to it smile.gif

EDIT: well that didn't take long. linX crashed on the second pass (and a crash). i pulled my two new sticks and am back to where i was

ok first things first. WOW is your arcade cabinet cool! have you found a game yet you haven't been able to play or did you just keep adding joysticks until it could play everything? xD man i cant even imagine how expensive that must have been, in terms of time and money

Back to the CPU question, why not upgrade? an AMD chip and board can be quite inexpensive, and would be far less work than trying to figure out an overclock your friend set up without fully understanding overclocking. If you want/need to keep the 775 system, push the CPU voltage a little higher. Worker Rounding errors seem to indicate the switches in the CPU aren't switching properly, and more voltage could fix that. Not a lot more voltage, just a touch more.

the beast is definitely a project of love smile.gif

she just about plays everything but not quite. i have plans to add a 270 degree steering wheel add on like the star wars yoke (the one that pops out is 360). also, gas/brake pedals will be needed smile.gif that addition should just about cover most games.

i thought about that, the amd mobo/chip, but now that i've spent a bit to upgrade to good fans, the water cooler, etc., i'll be sticking with what i have for at least a year.

i had a freeze up last night with prime95. i had the cpu and ram voltage two ticks up than my almost working OC settings and it locked up. oh well, i think this is about as most stable as i can get. at least it's no longer BSOD'ing on me.

thanks again for all the help.
