My Gaming PC ~$1500

Thread Starter
Hi guys ....
I have around $1000 to $1500 to spend on a gaming PC. This is my first ever build and I really need some help. This is my Current Build
http://pcpartpicker.com/user/theanonymousewok/saved/#savedbuild_503080

I need suggestions in what power supply, graphics card and case I should have. Any suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated. I can pick up the case from a U Mart near Brisbane, and I already own a copy of windows 7.

I'm hoping that the Intel i5 3570k that is in my build i will be able to overclock as i have no experience of overclocking, and I want to make sure a power supply can handle it .
Thanks for the help If i get any.
I'd go seasonic for the power supply since other companies use seasonic parts for their power supplies. Also get a modular one, cables can become a real annoyance especially for a first build.

The graphics card you have is really nice, though I personally would choose a MSI twin frozr iii version if there isn't much of a price difference.

Oh and get a samsung 840 ssd instead of the 830, yes there is a difference. And i'd go for a western digital hard drive instead of a seagate.

EDIT: overclocking barely makes a different in wattage, 500 watts for your system is plenty, go 600 if you want some headroom.

MrSharkington nailed it on the head, that's what i would have suggested.

Edit: actually try out the new samsung EVOs:  http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=210_902_1370&products_id=24742&zenid=0cf33dd1b16a3ce5b930c13155ee46f8

Wow , So quick to respond.
So what exactly is the difference between a 840 ssd and an 830?

And I will change my wattage down to a 550 watt. I wasn't sure how much I needed!!

I wasn't sure with the hard drive, but i know that im going to boot windows 7 from the ssd's for
speed, and then have all the other games and stuff installed on the main hard drive.

Thanks

840 is newer and faster and there is barely any difference in price. One other thing: If it's for gaming you won't need over 8gb unless you plan to use photoshop, etc.

And you said you were from brisbane right? Make sure you get the parts from an australian site (Pc case gear, umart, etc)

IMO I would go with an nVidia card. 660ti PE or something of the sort would not increase the cost that much. The build looks very similiar to my sig rig - solid build mate thumb.gif

True , I guess I could save some money with not getting so much ram ,
However I was planning to run a few servers off the PC, For example Minecraft, Terraria,
Would running servers use more ram ?

Oh btw do you think that I would be able to play Battlefield 3 on ultra? Thats what I'm aiming for.
Perhaps with your graphics card MSI twin frozr iii ~ it would run better?

Welcome to Overclock.net! To start off, the power supply is overkill. That system could be powered sufficiently by a well-made 500w power supply. I personally use an Antec HCG 520-M, which I have had no issues with. It is well made and is cheap, and is also modular. The graphics card is a good choice, very good value for money. Decent vapour-x cooler as well which is nice. As for a case, its really just comes down to personal preference. I like Corsair, Fractal Design, and NZXT's cases because they generally offer decent cooling, good quality and aren't too expensive.
Hopes this helps smile.gif

Those games aren't very demanding so it shouldn't affect the ram.

And I think my card is clocked slightly higher at stock, compared to the vapor x not sure, they're both solid graphics cards but I prefer the msi due to the thick metal shroud compared to the plastic on the vapor-x. Overclocked or not, my card maxes out the game over 60 fps pretty much 99% of the time. (The 7950 is almost equivalent to a 7970 once overclocked btw)

Does not look bad, the Corsair CX600 isn't really a quality unit, you should get something better (XFX 550W). 16GB is total overkill and Corsair Vengeance aren't great overclockers.

840 SSD is a bit low in writes compared to the 830.
