I asked Asus, which ram to use, they sent me a link to the qualified ram vendors list. however suggested 4 x 4 over 2 x 8. I replayed asking what will my mb support and what will my CPU support. no responses yet.

I bought the SSD (Samsung 840 256gig) was 'on sale' for $189 Australian.

I looked up the SSD guide. thanks sean.

returned overclock to standard. unplugged other hdd. set ide to ahci. installed win 7 ultimate

so I proceeded to install updates drivers etc on SSD. I then plugged in my HDDs. I went to overclock again. set from 200 to 250, turbo on. cool n quiet off. cores unlocked.

but I just get bod after windows load screen. so I set HDD back to ide. any tips on this? I haven't set to raid yet.

Windows loaded very slowly. said 8gig 2 gig usable.

this happened to me a couple weeks ago when I installed my new gpu. but when I overclocked again. it went back to 8 gig.

to proceeded to install updates drivers etc. plugged in my HDDs and it said 8 gig 4 gig usable. I went to overclock again. set from 200 to 232, overdrive on. cool n quiet off. cores unlocked. ram on auto ram voltage 1.5 same settings before SSD.

but now I just get bod after windows load screen.

Your mobo takes a max of 16gb Ram thats why they suggest 4x4, Good buy on the SSD I think you should check your ram sticks individually. Install OS with one stick and then verify it and then the other sticks one at a time

if I where to buy new ram ( wont be for a while as I just got new cooler and SSD.) what would suit my mb and CPU? mb says it can over clock to 2000mhz so would that be 1600mhz just up the voltages? or ref bus

Now that will depend on your Processor the Piledrivers can take higher clocked Ram than the Older processors.
I'd say get 2133 mhz or 1866 and if your cpu can't run it at that speed down clock to 1866 or 1600 and tighten timings.
I have a mixed set of Cl 11 2133 and cl 9 1600 but I down clocked to 1333 and tightened timings to cl 7 IIRC

The Mobo has native DDR 3 1866 with a bios update.

make sure that whatever ram you buy is compatible with your motherboard especially if you plan to oc it. Most of time at stock speeds you wont have any problems with buying whatever ram you decide to get but however though when you over clock any instabilities that you dont notice at stock speeds become absolutely glaringly evident and can cause a lot of problems. I have that issue right now. If I try to run it at 2133 I start having problems cause my ram isnt the most compatible with this board. dont mix ram on channels either. that can cause problems as well. So make sure you buy it in pairs or buy it all at once.

well the pqi I bought at the time wasn't on the list if compatible ram. but there is a ram ok button on the mb. it reduces the ram speed to the lowest just to boot into the bios.

I see most 2133mhz is 1600 @1.65v and 1600mhz at 1.5v or something
so if I over volt the pqi I may get 1600mhz or will it just kill it? or run unstable? how do you know what timings to adjust?
Set lower cpu multiplier and check if the ram is holding you back.If it's stable then it's the cpu. If not then set tRFC to 300ns and see the magic biggrin.gif .
