Reference PCB 7970 vrms.

When i read vrm temperature i get vrm 1 and vrm 2. i was wondering what there physical locations is as one get over 100C and the other is fine :/
post #2 of 7
Quickly edited a pic i pulled from google.

VRM1 is usually a lot hotter than VRM2. My MSI 7950, which is on the 7970 reference board just like the one above, runs at 55C for VRM1 and 33C for VRM2. That's with watercooling and a pretty decent overclock

Wow, that is incredibly hot. They should be on top of the PCB. Do you have this card overclocked and is it wedged under another PCB? Do you have a backplate on it?

Air cooling those VRM's is a pain. My card is the MSI 7950 Twin Frozr, when I still had it running on air, the heat plate didn't really help heat escape since its flat. A textured or low profile finned plate would have been better at keeping the memory and VRM's cool.

Also, at what percentage are you running the power limit? 20% would cook the VRM's for sure. Mine would start hitting 95C with Kombustor at around 15%, with the fans running full blast.

Now that I'm watercooling, I keep my power limit at 8-9%, and can hit a stable overclock of 1300/1650, VRM1 then sits at 58C I think. If I push the power limit up to 20%, it still manages to climb up to 90C

Imo, don't fiddle with the pcb block. The stock vrm thermal pads may not be multiple installation friendly, so don't touch what ever that comes out. My 4890's pads stretched; therefore I pulled it out - not a good decision without a spare at hand.
Vrm chips are said to work up to 125 celcius continuously and at higher(140c) for 1000 hours. I really had a dilemma between 1ghz and 950mhz, today you just slide the bar. Thus, I think the old days of overclocking against the heat threshold is over.
