They are using unified memory architectures. Just not the HUMA standard.

Who to trust...

The stuff PCPer heard does seem too contradictory to things we have already heard about the PS4 though. I guess it's still wait and see.

Well considering PCPer asked AMD a question about hardware that the PS4 isn't even using should tell you everything.

I was under the impression that HUMA wasn't coming until Kaveri.

Lastly, it's a bit of a bummer that neither Temash nor Kabini incorporate AMD's heterogeneous unified memory access (hUMA). This is the feature that will allow the GPU and CPU to share system memory without copying it back and forth, eliminating a massive source of latency in today's APUs. This is where we expect the company's SoCs to stand apart from some of the other highly-integrated processors being designed. Unfortunately, we won't see hUMA in a shipping APU until Kaveri is released later this year.

I would like to point out. The OP article does not actually say that the ps4 does not have huma. It says that kabini does not have huma. Since ps4 does not use Kabini, it is not saying the ps4 does not have huma.

The second problem with the article is simple, it deflects.

"Our spokesperson made inaccurate statements about our semi-custom APU architectures and does not speak for Microsoft, Sony or the AMD semi-custom business unit responsible for co-developing the next generation console APUs."

Which is the problem. They are not saying that the ps4 does not use huma. It says that the spokesperson made inaccurate statements and does not speak for the unit creating the chip.

If I was to say that x person made inaccurate statements and does not speak for person y. It does not mean person y does not actually support those statements.

You see the problem. Just like microsoft not explaining xbox features. This is just a deflection from the issue.

Well, the APUs in the next consoles won't exactly ship in a retail package, so that definition stays within its bounds.

Also, the Xbox 360 has ATI's first unified GPU architecture, which is probably the only DX 9 and not DX 10+ hardware that has this sort of arrangement, and then AMD went on to release the first consumer discrete GPUs based on a unified architecture that are DX 10 capable, so in the custom CPU, GPU, APU business anything before retail standalone parts are made available is possible.

What probably happened is that someone at Microsoft rightfully picked up the phone and shouted some mean words like the following euphemism I'm about to reproduce:

"Microsoft rep.: Hey, AMD, how's your cash reserves ? I heard they were doing fine and your FX-over-9000-reputation-enhancing CPUs were selling like hotcakes. You bunch of incompetents, we know you are itching to promote the best APU you have ever made, but we ARE in the same boat here, our failure is yours too, so help us out 'cause we're already in the middle of a fantabulastic, craptastic manure storm of super epic mega proportions where our console isn't even half of what it used to be three months ago when our now ex-President of the Interactive Entertainment Business first watch-TV-TV-TV-TV-TV-Call-of-Duty-HD-Dog-TV-TV-TV-TV-go-home announced it.

AMD rep.: Oh, that... Ok, well... er...we'll make a sort of say... weak excuse that doesn't really address the problem but seemingly denies it enough that Xbox fans think it's warranted to continue cheering. It's the best we can do without flat out lying."
