Good Surge Protector? - Page 3

You can also test the MOVs health. In this DIY example 350V @ 1mA are applied to the MOV with a digital voltmeter in parallel:

According to what I've read (as I discussed earlier), that light can still be lit even if the MOVs are busted open.

The light goes out only when the MOV thermal fuse blows. Hence light on might, or might not, mean that the thermally fused MOV is OK (you can have busted, degraded or removed MOV, and if thermal fuse remains intact light will still be on). Biased as it is, I think this information is better than no information at all.

For 99% certainty we really need to test or replace MOVs.

All the dead ones lost their little light, all the live ones (I had to have them tested for insurance purposes; I believe they tested clamping voltage with a scope attached) have the light still on.

Another thing about the Tripp Lite units is their build quality... I mean, dang, these things could literally function as a weapon if necessary! Solid aluminum (powder-coated) casing with pretty thick aluminum, and anywhere edges meet they overlap (mostly corners, curved) before being screwed together. Just the 4-outlet IsoBar4Ultra weighs ~4-6lbs at least!!!

Also, seeing as I do audio work, having isolated banks with completely separate EMI/RFI filtration banks means zero background "noise" gets in through the power, nor does my equipment put anything bad back into the house's power smile.gif

A fireproof metal case is most definitely a very good idea for any surge protector with MOVs inside.

Well, not everyone is going to have theirs tested. The vast majority say, "Whew. The little light is still on."
