Was the PS3 "Higher End" than the PS4 when it came out? - Page 2

The GPU in these consoles really aren't much further behind then when the PS3 launched and the 8800gtx was offering more then twice the GPU power.

In reality the PS3 GPU was mediocre, it used older tech and really wasn't special for the time. The GPU in the 360 was more advanced and more powerful and most games tend to get better framerate on the 360. Now the Cell CPU was mostly a Chip made for floating point performance, lacking in integer performance compared to the 360 as well (what had 3 PPC cores vs 1 in the ps3). PS3 also has a faster memory system but the unified memory pool in the outrun while slower tended to work out better for the 360.

Each Jaguar core probably isn't much stronger then a single PPC core found in the 360, except the new consoles have 8 of them.
GPU wise These new consoles will be a little more outdated then last gen but I doubt anyone expected a titan in these things.
For Things that the Cell was good for, aka Floating Point operations, you can offload all that to the GPU (what would do a better job anyways), so a CPU like the Cell is pointless now of days.

Though Personally consoles should have been held off a year for kaveri, would have make for a better CPU IMO. GCN is still prime tech for consoles though.

Did Sony reveal what clock speed the Jaguar cores will run at? I think that makes a big difference, no?

yes and no

maybe in grunt horsepower but you cant ignore 8GB of unified GDDR5...think of the high res packs you can fit with that spec.

XB1 also has 8GB of unified DDR3 + 32MB of ESRAM. Both the XB1 and PS4's OS takes a good deal of RAM though.

Don't forget that when in development the 7970 was the fastest GPU core around and simply was too costly and power hungry to toss into a console.

The consoles simply should have been released sooner or should have waited till Kaveri + 22nm GCN, what would have been no problem a year from now.

1.6Ghz sounds slow... CPUs have been above the 2.5Ghz range for about 3 years now, why is the clock speed so slow? cooling and power constraints??
Pretty much. You got to remember the are EIGHT of them...so eight cores at 2.4GHz+ would need a lot to cool and a lot of power.

I do stand by my thought that a faster quad core would have been a better choice. The Jaguar cores pretty much suck all around.

The only thing people have to care about here is that the next gen consoles are MUCH more powerful than previous generation. Regardless of specs, it is about time. Also, because the consoles are running X86 architecture, it will make porting things over to the PCs much easier. However, how easy has yet to be seen thanks to the unified memory architecture each console will be using (not hUMA, but UMA, big difference).

As far as GPUs go, I believe the PS4 falls around a 7790~7850 while the X1 is around a 7770-7790.

Another thing to bear in mind here is that the next gen consoles will have 16 times the amount of memory as current gen consoles have. One of the biggest limiting factors for devs with current gen hardware is memory.

More powerful than current gen, yes, but still very weak and disappointing. I would have rather waited another year myself and have gotten more powerful consoles. Imagine instead of a 7850 or so we got something along the lines of a 7950/7970...that would have been a supremely higher performance jump and I think would be worth the wait.

But not very cost effective. You have to make the consoles affordable yet powerful for the package.
