Asus Zenbook VS. Sony Vaio Pro 13

Thread Starter
Hi OCN.

I've been in the the market for a new laptop before school. I've narrowed down my search to the Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A and Sony Vaio Pro 13. I'm having trouble deciding which one to go with. Specs as follows:

Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A-DH71T-CA

  • Aluminum Build
  • 13.3" Touchscreen
  • 1920x1080 resolution
  • Intel Core i7-3517U (Ivy Bridge)
  • 4gb RAM (Non-upgradeable)
  • 256gb SSD
  • Intel HD Graphics 4000
  • Keyboard: English only
  • Micro HDMI Output
  • Mini VGA Output
  • 2x USB 3.0
  • 802.11 A/B/N Wifi + Intel WIDI + Bluetooth 4.0
  • 4-cell battery 6840mah (approximately 6-6.5h of battery life)
  • Ethernet Dongle
  • 2.86lbs
  • Windows 8 64-bit
  • Warranty 1 year parts/labour + 1 year accidental damage
  • Returnable within 14-days
  • Total Cost: $1,213

Pros: Great laptop. Looks better than the Sony, IMO. Zenbook series is well liked by most people. Returnable within 14-days, even if opened.

Cons: Older architecture, 4gb RAM.

Sony Vaio Pro 13 (Custom)
  • Carbon Fiber Build
  • 13.3" Touchscreen
  • 1920x1080 resolution
  • Intel Core i5-4200U (Haswell)
  • 8gb RAM (Non-upgradeable)
  • 256gb SSD
  • Intel HD Graphics 4400
  • Keyboard: English only
  • HDMI Output
  • 2x USB 3.0
  • 802.11 A/B/N Wifi + Intel WIDI + Bluetooth 4.0
  • 4-cell battery (approximately 6.5-7h of battery life)
  • Possible future upgrade of extended Sheet Battery that doubles battery life to 13h (+$150 not included)
  • Extra USB charging port on AC Adapter (phone charger)
  • 2.34lbs
  • Windows 8 64-bit
  • Warranty 1 year parts/labour
  • Non-Refundable
  • Total Cost: $1,401

Pros: Another great laptop, one of the very few to offer new Haswell architecture. Customizable to my wants. A cashback deal might lower the cost another $55. The SSD is reported to be the fastest for Ultrabooks.

Cons: Some users report issues with Wifi (poor range, dropped connection). A few users report that the wifi issues are fixed through a driver update. Due to poor hinges & design, the screen wobbles when you use the touchscreen. Some issues reported with responsiveness of the touchpad. The corners are very sharp (possibly could cut people or your cases/bags). Non-refundable.

I can't decide which one to go with. Perhaps the bright minds on OCN can introduce a new angle to help me decide. Thanks!
