Cable Modem

Thread Starter
Hey guys, my ISP finally decided to remove my $2 monthly fee for cable modem rental to $5 so I'm looking for a basic cable modem. I run a 30Mbps (sometimes I rate in at 35Mbps) connection and I have 3 computers, 1 roku box, 2 netflix streamers in my family. I run a WRT54GL with Tomato firmware (old I know but I don't stream HD so no issues) and I'm hard lined so I don't want ANY wireless features on the cable modem. I basically want a basic cable modem that can handle my usage, be built to last 2+ years, and is in the price range of around $60.

Appreciate the advice. If there is a better option above my price range let me know why it's needed. Currently I run a RCA DCM425 which is my $2 rental one from my ISP. Thought about buying one as they are only $45 new and it's been a solid fighter for 2 years now haha. Well it would kind of depend on what your ISP supports for modems not all kinds work with all carriers.

I ordered my self a zoom 5341J as a basic cable modem. I did have a uBee 3500 DDM that worked flawlessly for 1.5years. Motorola and Cisco are the other types supported by my ISP, but my luck has been dreadfully terrible with both those companies for modems/routers. Motorola works but firmware is another story...

So, you might want to check if they have a specific list. If looking for something cheap that ubee i mentioned is like 49.99, there was one on ebay. I almost bought it myself.

I have this guy. Transition went flawlessly. All I did is call Comcast to activate it. I hit high 30s low 40s in day, and high 40s low 50s at night with Comcast's $80 package. Coupled that with an ASUS RT-N56U router and an ASUS GX-D1051 switch smile.gif

If you could inflate the target price by about $10 you'd end up with one of these:

Edit: As agreed by the above post smile.gif
Mine is trucking along nicely on Time Warner's 100 mbit package.

Thank you for the lists, I must admit I was torn between the Motorola and the Zoom 5341....the zoom has some retarded specs to it "Download speed up to 343 Mbps. Upload speed up to 143 Mbps." never thought a cable modem could handle such speeds haha. I forgot to mention my ISP and for this I'm sorry, I'm with mediacom which I'm almost 99% sure is Comcast in disguise (everything down to their ads are the same).

I'm curious how good are both the Motorola SB6121 and Zoom 5341 in terms of quality and warranty? I saw the Motorola only gives 12 months warranty where Zoom gives 24 months, do they actually honor their warranty without excuses? Will take about 14 months to pay itself off but if it lasts over 2 years then it's worth paying a bit more for a better product. Also does Motorola honor open-box items? I saw one on newegg for $50 and thought I might get it (I'm a cheap skate tongue.gif).

The zoom hasn't arrived yet and date got sent back. My troubles with Motorola are my own specifically the sbg 6580 which are quite common with other users.
I was told and read on amazon that the black versions are not the "actual" modem and come with no warranty or limited verses the white versions which the company supposedly only sells. Idk, some weird stuff that you could read if you cared. Just my personal troubles led me away. The zoom has some great reviews on amazon and its the only other modem i got to choose from.

Its your money.

Yeah I saw that one as well Ezk, they also don't support firmware for it and they advise you buy the white version to get firmware updates. So I decided to say screw them and I looked up the importance of docsis 2 vs 3 and for the speed tier I'm in and planning to get later I don't see much value in it. I live out in the county and during peak hours I keep my maximum speeds and my speeds are never restricted, I believe it would improve my "power boost" speeds but as long as I'm getting what I pay for I'm happy (I'm getting 99%-100% of what I pay for which is phenomenal).

So I decided to go a cheaper route for now until I get my 30Mbps service next January, I got a cheap $20 SB5101 from a buddy that takes good care of his hardware. Can handle up to 38Mbps down and 32Mbps up so it should handle my usage easily enough. It will be 5 months or so before my contract ends so it will pay for itself and then I will decide from there if my cable modem is causing issues or not, if it does then I will keep an eye out for a good deal on the white SB6121 or that Zoom. The nice thing here is perhaps something better will come out or I can get in a good black friday sale for one haha.

Thanks again for all the help smile.gif
