6850/7970 Eyefinity adapters

Thread Starter
So i have a problem... I have a 6850 graphics card and i have 3 monitors. I can only run 2 as i don't have a displayport to DVI adaper yet. I will soon (next 4-5 months) Upgrade to a 7970. Now this is the problem : If i want to run Eyefinity now - i will need a REGULAR displayport to DVI adapter, when I run my 7970, i will need a MINI Displayport to DVI adapter. and these adapters ain't cheap.

So does this work? I'm going to buy a regular DP to DVI, then get this adapter (http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-105714-Mini-DisplayPort-Male/dp/B002YQYCUM) when i buy my new GFX card. Cheers for the help smile.gif

stacking adapters doesnt seem like a good idea.
Its possible it may not run even though the first adapter is active.

I suggest you just wait until you get the 7970. The 6850 is too weak anyway for eyefinity, unless you're playing old games like left 4 dead.
I tried it and the best I could do was medium settings with Dirt 3, around 30-40 fps.

I'm completely alright setting my settings down to low/med to get decent frames. I just really want the experience smile.gif

what cables does your monitors have?
If you have a monitor with vga, you can get a Display port to VGA adapter cheaper than the eyefinity adapters.
All Displayport to VGA adapters are active, even the cheapest ones. This is because Displayport is digital, so they need an active adapter to convert the signal to analog VGA.
This is what I did to avoid buying the expensive Active displayport to DVI adapter.
I used this one for my third monitor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812340015

Note: if you only have DVI monitor cables, buy the supported eyefinity adapters like the one from sapphire.
The cheap Displayport to DVI adapters are not active.

I can benchmark some games for you if you want. But my combined resolution is only 4098x768 using two 19" and one 20" monitor.

Just to let you know if you are using only 1920x1200 or lower, you can get an active single link adapter. They are much cheaper than active dual link adapters. Like 30 bucks v 100 bucks.

I have both Sapphire adapters ( MiniDP and DP), and they both work great.

I have a few MiniDP-DP adapters. The one that came with my 7970 Lightning is the best built one, but I can't find the OEM for it. StarTech has good MiniDP-DP and DP-MiniDP

I would just get a DP-MiniDP adapter and the MiniDP-DVI adapter, it's cheaper than 2 DVI adapters.
