Possibility of CPU bottleneck in BF3.

although there are countless finds through google search on this specific topic and with answers stating that an i7 3770k @ stock or better yet, overclocked @ 4.5ghz, should NOT bottleneck a single gigabyte gtx 670 oc, i've been having a hard time confirming this.

a while ago, i thought it may have been a driver issue that was causing my gtx 670 to never reach 99% usage (if it did, it was never able to maintain a consistent 99%), however, i recently decided to take my 3770k from 4.5ghz to 4.6ghz and found that the GPU usage stayed more consistent (always above 90% usage rather than dropping to the low 80th percentile) than when my CPU was @ 4.5ghz.

at first i thought it was a slightly unstable overclock, so i ended up raising the CPU voltage to about 1.224v @ 4.5ghz and continued to do everything i normally do for about 2 weeks with no problems (no WHEA errors and etc.) but, doing this gave me the same results in regards to my GPU usage in BF3.

At this point, I left the voltage alone @ 1.224v and raised my turbo multiplier by 1, giving me 4.6ghz and in return, tightening the GPU usage gap (@ 4.5 ~80%-99% & @ 4.6ghz ~ 85%-99%)i've been seeing.

i know there are several different things that can lead to what i'm seeing with my 670's GPU usage and have tried taking everything back to stock clocks, changing drivers, and etc.

i guess the question comes down to, is it normal for these GPUs to vary their GPU usage depending on what's happening in the game? i always thought that GPU usage should be pegged @ 99% when gaming (maybe this is not the case anymore). Or maybe, GPU usage rarely hitting 99% doesn't have to mean a CPU bottleneck?

P.S.: sorry if this whole post sounds quite confusing as i, myself, am pretty damn confused as to what may be happening tongue.gif

You definitely don't have a CPU bottleneck. Pretty much every single game is going to be GPU limited @ 1080p+.

Yup, BF3 should not be bottlenecked by your CPU. I get a maximum of 55% CPU usage while playing BF3 with a overclocking 660ti and a 2700K@4.5Ghz

On games such as BF3 esp. on a 64 player map having a nice overclock on your cpu defiantly comes in handy. For example my 4770k @ 4.9ghz massacres 64 player maps with ultra/high settings at 2560x1440 always stays 60 fps even when huge explosions etc hit. However if I play around 4.5ghz same gtx 680 overclock ill get on average 3-7 fps less so it does unleash a small amount. Whether it be gpu or cpu thumb.gif

ahh ok, i think this was what i was lookin for smile.gif

seems like those 3-7fps for me are making huge differences when those huge explosions happen. im generally right around 65fps while in a calm area but, when i find myself in an area with not TOO much going on but, some explosions here and there i see my fps right around 60; take away 3-7fps from there and i feel like my fps took a giant dump tongue.gif

thanks for the info

@fishymamba: thanks for confirming as well
