That's what I thought too, but the X79 platform offers a smoother experience undoubtedly. Are we after frames or a good PC experience? It's like the argument of 16 GB vs 8GB of RAM. I for one know that the whole GPU fad is unnecessary for 1080P or even 1440P. X79 is more future proof then Z87. It has more capability. More expansions. More processing power. On the other hand the GTX780 can be replaced down the road with a better GPU. On either
platform. The Haswell mainstream chips on the other hand are the end of the road. Most likely, you will never upgrade your Mobo or CPU after your first build. In that scenario, the X79 is a more solid buy, despite whatever monetary advantage you will get with Z87. You will have 4 more threads. More capacity for upgrading. Say you're gonna go with 8 or 16GB of RAM. You can expand more RAM later because you have more slots. You can also expand your storage with more SATA ports. You can also go for a full lane GPU experience(as trivial and astronomically small the difference between x8 and x16 is). There are plenty of reasons to go with a good X79 platform then a comparable Z87.
Again though, Snuckle raises a good point. If leaving with as much money as possible by the end of the ordeal is your goal, then the Z87 is the better choice. I made the same choice myself when I was deciding between BE965 and BE1100T or i7-920. I personally, regret my choice, even though it was the right decision at the time. Your pick
Also, that GTX780 is completely unnecessary despite what people tell you. I find that my GPU has the Least
impact on my experience. I picked up the 5870 for 200$ back when the 6xxx series were coming out. Through XFX RMA I came out with a 6950 2GB. No discernible difference. Not to mention that, I haven't had the need to upgrade in years. I suggest a 760, 7950, or 770. It'll be cheaper and just as good for 1080p. Imo, Nvidia is my pick as of late, more consistent experience imo.
