Upgrading from i7 920

Hey,

So I think it's about time to upgrade from the X58 platform. I love my current setup, but it's starting to show its age.

I'd mainly be upgrading for new features like USB 3.0 and SATA 3.

I was looking at a 4770K, but my only concern was that I remember reading about some USB 3 bug that was present in first revisions of Haswell, not sure if that was ever fixed.
How much of an increase in cpu performance is Haswell clock for clock over bloomfield?

Also, I might SLI my 670s with a recent price drop here in teh UK bringing new 670s to ~ 300 USD.

Any recommendations on motherboards? I have always been a fan of ASUS, but I recently helped my friend build an Ivybridge rig and Gigabyte seems to have some quality boards.

Price isn't really an issue but I won't have a need for a Rampage or some crazy overclocking record board.

As for ram, what's standard these days 8gb, 16gb? I've always liked corsair and g.skill ram

Also, are there any new coolers out there that are substantially better than my H100? I think it might be kicking the bucket as cpu temps are almost 10C higher than what they used to be. Might just need a cleaning or reapplying the TIM.

Or am I just better off waiting for the next platform?

Thanks for any help.

Hey Qazzaq!

The USB 3.0 bug is when you go into stand by with a USB 3.0 USB drive/storage device plugged in, and than when your resume, you may lose data. I believe there is a fix already.

As for performance: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-920-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4770K
Seems to be about an 30-50% increase.

As for motherboards, it depends on your needs. Into heavy Gaming? Overclocking? Or just a motherboard good for value? Whats your budget?

As for standards, Corsair and G.Skill ram is still great, and if you game only 8GB is more than enough, however 2 x 8gb (16GB) will be great for upgrade ability in the future.

As for H100, it's still a great CPU cooler and I don't think its worth to upgrade it. I'd say just clean it off and and reapply the TIM.

As for waiting for the next platform, honestly it's up to you. I think a gen 1 i7 series is still awesome, but if my system was fine and preforming well, I wouldn't upgrade. If your system is showing some age such as slow down, overheating, etc. than I would upgrade.

Have a nice day,
Dave

I can tell you from a gaming point of view as I have had every i7 since the 920...my 920 is still cranking as a secondary game rig/useless rig lol but has a beatdown 7950 and from playing bf3 and gw2 on both you can defiantly feel the difference with the 4770k way smoother average fps a lot higher you get the point like stated above its prly in game about 30% difference give or take.

I would upgrade now as itll be some years before we see new arch.

I have decided to bite the bullet and have ordered:

4770k
Asus Z87 Deluxe
G.SKill Ares 16gb 2400

AS I wait for my parts I was just wondering if there certain guides for overclocking Haswell chips and maybe one specifically for Asus Bios.

Also, what's up with these new BIOS things, UEFI I think? Is it just a graphical upgrade for the BIOS?

Cheers

Yeah the new BIOSes are more graphical than the X58 platform.

As for a guide, this guide might help you for overclocking.

Cam is spot on, UEFI just adds mouse functionality, and looks better.
