Looking for highend HTPC build help

Thread Starter
So im looking to build a nice live tv/dvr/media playback htpc..

My budgets about $1,000-$1,400

what i need is,

1. Ability to add a timewarner tv cable card with atleast 4-6 tuners
2. Ability to playback and media i have, avi, mkv, dvd iso, bluray iso, 3d
3. Completely lag free, silent, low energy.
4. Wifi
5. Nice remote

So far the only things i have picked out are,

Samsung 840 120gb SSD
for the OS

WD Red 2TB nas drive
For live tv dvr

WD Red 3TB nas drive x2
For Media playback of mine.

And possibly,
Ceton InfiniTV 6 PCIe - 5205-DCT06IN-PCIE - Six-tuner Card
For a cable card.

Have no clue what would be a good case, cpu, mb for a htpc or even which OS to use.

samsung just came out with the EVO I'd get that. It's even on sale for the time being.
lag free silent low energy sounds like you need an APU Haswell Ivy or amd A10 or A8, probably haswell as it has better onboard graphics.
there are some tuner cards in the marketplace.
I don't know much about HTPC other than that

what dvr software are you planning on using? Ideally you want 1x HDD per tuner otherwise you'll heavily fragment your drives over time as a DVB stream from a tuner card is of unknown length initially so when writing multiple streams, it has to interleave the data between free space and existing data.

OK, well I highly recommend mythtv (http://www.mythtv.org/detail/mythtv) it's free and runs under linux so on one hand you save yourself a Win 7 license but on the other you potentially have to get used to a completely new operating system. This lets you load share across multiple hard drives which is a bonus and has more features than you can shake a stick at e.g. series link recording, manages clusters of machines with various storage and tuner options, automatic transcoding to other formats and automatic advert removal, remote web interface to schedule and playback recordings to name a few. If you're interested in trying it, start with mythbuntu (http://www.mythbuntu.org/) which has pretty much everything pre configured and can be run straight from a CD or USB pen drive without the need for installing

It'll take you a while to get it all set up though where as windows media centre will probably just work but with less functionality.

Linux wont work if time warner marks any of the channels copy once or copy never (if he wants to watch or record the programming). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copy_Control_Information

My cable provider sets copy once on EVERYTHING except the over the air channels making a linux build completely useless in my case (Big bummer). It looks like Time Warner does the same thing: http://www.missingremote.com/forums/cable-provider-copy-protection-switched-digital-video-and-self-install-status-master-list

Unfortunately there is no open source alternative (or really any alternative) to Windows Media Center in regards to CableCards.

Also, Windows does a really good job about not fragmenting the drives when recording, plus windows 7 does a great job auto-defragging the drive.

As for the build, I was using a older low power AMD Dual Core e4050, 4gb of ram and a $30 video card just fine for recording 4 HD channels and playing back a MKV (something around 70watts under load). The only down side is it would sometimes have choppy playback if it was left running on live TV for several days, rebooting would resolve the issue.

Prices:

CPU: $25 (purchased used here on OCN)
Motherboard: $35 (On sale from 50 on newegg)
RAM: $35 DDR2 2x2GB (purchased used here on OCN)
HDD: 32GB Raptor I had lying around
HDD: 1TB drive I had lying around
Case: Cheap-o $25 from Frys
Tuner: Ceton Echo InfiniTV 4 (USB) - $150

I then upgraded to someting a little better (HTPC in my Sig)

I have since converted my HTPC into a virtual machine on my ESXi host (allocated 2 virtual cores and 3GB of ram). Works great now that I have it rebooting once a day at 2am (Would lock up after a couple days of doing w/e Windows Does) . I use Xbox's to play back and view live TV. It has access to my 12TB storage VM (which I allocate 1TB to DVR storage, holding ~160 episodes at one time)

You don't need an exceptionally fast HDD, 24Mb/s is pretty much the highest bit rate TV can be (thats a little b) so about 3MB/s. You only need 18MB/s for 6 streams.

An HTPC doesn't need to be super high-end for what it does. An FM2 setup and 4gb of RAM as opposed to 8 should bring you back within your budget. This A6 APU and this Gigabyte board would save you some cash and make a discrete GPU unnecessary.
